Ford parts on our Jags
Hi Folks,
I was fixing a problem with my reversing sensors last week and found that the sensor itself was actually a Ford part. The part number was 15K859AA where the Jaguar part number is XR86401.
I recall Ford sold Jaguar in March 2008.
Does anyone know if Ford parts were routinely installed at manufacture?
This is the second I've found - the other being the hood release lever in the driver footwell.
Thanks for your help,
Tony

Some small parts were Ford items & the ignition key/lock is a Ford design. The antifreeze number is a Ford specification as well. But all the main parts are Jaguar or the usual industry system manufacturers such as Bosch, ZF etc...
Ford US used the drive train of the XJ8/XK8 in the Thunderbird and Lincoln LS for several years around 2000. A lot of the engine parts are common but some are not. The common tensioner conversion part numbers are well documented but most of the other parts are not. Such a conversion table would be a very valuable addition to the forum in case someone with the expertise and access would like to take that on.
Tony....a lot of Ford sourced parts are used in the S-type and X-type....moreso than the XJ's
Of course a lot of Ford designed parts but manufactured by Jaguar are used but the vast majority of electrical and electronic parts on models from the X308 V8 series cars onwards is sourced mainly from Nippon Denso and Hitachi....which is no bad thing IMO ;o)
Alternators and starters are Denso or Hitachi, the A/C system is Denso, as is the ignition and fuel injection.

And of the "Ford sourced" parts how many are actually *manufactured* by Ford? Darn few, I'm guessing :-)
I think car companies are best described as "assemblers" rather than "manufacturers", if you get what I mean.

Even Hyundai who manufacture all their own steel still have to outsource componenets....I have a lot of respect for Hyundais.
The peripheral suppliers surrounding a major factory are huge and supplies up to 805 or more of components.
Jaguar now is on the leading edge of vehicle production in both technical sophistication and engineering know how....the new XJ and the soon to be released F-type sports car ;o))

Probably bad form to reply to my own thread, but...
Taking the Ford part issue a bit further, would an established NA dealer install Ford parts instead of Jaguar parts.
Note the reversing sensor for the X308 is also used in the same era S-types.
