Default Fuel Line Leak above Differential 98 VDP

Has anyone changed a fuel line above the differential? I am looking for some tips on how to get up in there. I thought that I had read a thread on this but no able to find it. Any tips would be appreciated.

Look for the various fuel pump replacement threads because those fuel lines are part of the job, and the hardest part of the job. So, lots of discussion about tools and techniques.

The problem is that you will need to determine what is causing the leak. Whether it is the line, or the fitting receiving the line.

I've done the job before, if you could rent a small child or monkey, you would be well on the way.
The fuel filter is in the same area but off to the left.
It is a job I dislike, being that I have large hands.
Get a GOOD quality plastic quick release fuel line tool. or make one by cutting 100mm from the bottom of the fuel filler compartment drain hose from under the car and slitting it from one end to the other.
as said about my hands, I also need to remove the park brake cable, I usually undo the 13mm adjusting nut.
Also I need to loosen, and remove the forward sub frame bolts on the diff carrier, not difficult - 17mm 1nd 19mm heads and prize the front of the diff carrier down with a tyre lever.
the job itself is replace 2 "o" rings,
order 1 from your local Jag dealer, then take that junk to your local Hydraulic shop show them your sample and buy some good quality fuel resistant "Viton" replacements. Tell the sales person what they are for and how much pain it takes to get them out. Put plenty of Vaseline or similar when re-assembling.
Having said all that, I have fluked it on occasions with a seal-pick, but it is not much more work to undo your tank and turn it over to see
It might pa you to buy a 'CD' manual off EBAY for around $10.00

Thanks so much Dc4Prez This information is encouraging. I do have the CD and will do some looking and hopefully get a better understanding of the task at hand.

Thanks again

If you do go the route of matching the Jaguar seals to the viton seals, posting the part numbers or dimensions that the counterman tells you are applicable would be helpful to other members to avoid buying a seal just for matching purposes.

Check if you canfind out if the fuel pump has been changed. If the tank was not removed properly and they just leaned it down to remove the pump and sending module they probably damaged the clips that hold the fiel lines in the tank you will smell fuel if in a garage and see small puddle under differential after you have done the filter. Clips need to be replaced to fix. Fuel leaking at tank.

Thanks for the information. There is fuel leaking only when the car is running. So I am pretty confident that the leak is on the pressure side. Still haven't gotten round to getting a good look been busy fixin other things at present but getting close. If it turns out to be a seal leaking I will try my best to get a Viton equivalent O ring seal. Would anyone happen to have the Jaguar P/N for these seals I can purchase one and do the legwork before hand on getting a Vitron #

If the line is leaking at the tank you will smell fuel when driving with the windows down. remember to replace the heat shield for the fuel pump. It's located over the left tail pipe.

I agree that this job is made much easier by lowering the back of the subframe. Otherwise, you need the aformentioned small monkey!

Well, I'll jump in here - I too have the gas smell that is being drawn from the trunk area into the back of the cabin when the windows are down or the sunroof is open or rarely when hard cornering.

I have not spotted any fuel leakage. I did have a "Check Gas Cap" warning randomly and replaced the cap. I have still gotten a check cap light once.

So this points to a fuel line leakage at the tank? Do I investigate that from inside the trunk or under the car.

Thanks for any comments.

Good News I guess. So was it the line corroded or the seals leaking and the fuel running down the line away from the tank.

So any comments why I am getting the gas smell in the cabin with NO fuel leakage?

Also, my gas smell is almost all in the cabin. I don't (or at least very, very minimal) smell gas vapors in trunk. I also don't think I am getting leakage because the smell does not linger at all.

Can someone give me a step by step on troubling shooting with these symptoms?

Thanks.

Is this tool of a standard size? Can someone direct me on where and what to ask for when buying this Quick Release Tool? Brand suggestion? Picture?

Thanks.

There are hundreds of places to buy the release tools.

Performance Tool Quick Disconnect Tools A C and Fuel Line Plastic Set of 6 | eBay

The Grey and Blue type ones are the ones that are required to release the fuel lines.

There are posts that describe home made sections of metal or PVC pipe for the same purpose.

Or failing buying a tool - in the boot, to the left of centre, right near the tank strap, there is a black poly pipe drain about 11 -12mm OD, very hard plastic, it is the fuel filler drain. When you pull it through the floor, to take the tank out, cut 100mm off it, it will still be long enough to pass through both bulkheads when you re-install it, Slit the 100mm piece lengthways with a trim knife. You now own a QD tool of better quality than any other plastic one I have owned . the extra length is perfect for this job, I sharpened mine like a pencil (not too much) -

FWIW I was able to get my paws up in there and disconnect the fuel line by unbolting the driveshaft at the differential. This job is no fun no matter how you cut it.

Update My fuel line was broke just as it enters the fuel tank. Was able to pick out the rusted piece and fabricated new fuel lines from the middle of the car to the tank. Choose not to remove the O rings in the tank so unfortunately was not able to find Viton equivalent O rings. Thanks so much to everyone who contributed to this strung. Thank you Jaguar Form for giving me an avenue to seek help with my car.
