Hi everyone I wonder if anyone could help me with this problem.
I have a 2007 Jaguar XJ 2.7D automatic.
I accidentally spilt a small amount of fizzy drink onto my centre consul which went into and around the automatic J gate gear selector. Luckily the vehicle was parked on my drive outside the house.
I mopped up the with a cloth and didn’t think any more if it until I started the car up next morning to head off to work.
The car started as usual but when I pressed the brake to select reverse, it would not come out park.
I’ve removed the centre consul and radio etc in order to gain access to the selector but can’t get into the sector part to see if it is wet.
It looks like the actuator that should pop out doesn’t do it automatically unless I assist it with my finger from the underside. It then allows me to move the selector into gear doing it this way.
I have read some other posts and watched several YouTube videos but not sure how to identify the fault.
There appears to be no fuses blown, the brake lights work although I can’t hear a clicking noise from the actuator when I press the brake pedal.
could the water have accessed the actuator or could it be a brake switch.
im dressing the thought of having to buy a complete new gear selector.
Note this problem was never there until I spilt the drink on it.
hope you can help

Colin Jaguar XJ 2.7D gear selector stuck in park
Hello again
a quick update on my progress, I’ve managed to remove the gear selector mechanism from the housing, which was pretty simple when you don’t know how 😀😀
just need some help on how I can locate the source of the problem.
Could it be any of the following?
1. the actuator is broken as it doesn’t seem to move when I press the brake pedal. It does move manually with my finger and allows me to move the gear selector into gear.
2. Has the fizzy drink that was spilt into the electric circuit board under the gear selector cover knackered the board.
3. does it have anything to do with the brake light switch as I can’t hear any clicking noise when I press the brake pedal, even though the brake lights do come on when pedal is pressed. If it is this, could you help me locate this switch which talks to the gear selector.
4. could it be a simple fuse blown which is hidden somewhere on the car in a box I’m not aware of other then the fuse and relay box under the bonnet on the drivers side.
any help would be appreciated
many thanks
