just recent had "gearbox fault "up on screen....when you turn on jag first all is ok ..reverse is perfect but put her into drive and normally a few yards then" bang into limp/safe mode or else will only rev and then "bang"...safe mode(well you dont really get a bang ..just a lurch!! checked fluids all ok

There's two possibilities;
A drum failure, it fractures and all you can get is reverse and 5th gear.
Or, bearing failure that allows the A drum to move, breaking an o ring, same result.

There may be other causes, but those are the 2 most common. Do a search on here, you'll find plenty of posts on the topic.

Try the old "harboot". (remove battery cable). It has reset my transmission module twice for exactly your symptoms. If that don't get it, I agree with Rob.
