Bob,

I've moved your question from General Tech Help to X308 forum. Members here with the same model will be able to help with the broken release catch.

Look at post #2 in the following forum thread:

https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/x...release-59949/

Also look at this other one (view posts# 5 and #6):

https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/x...-stuck-106016/

Internet search brought up this solution on 2carpros.com:

My son has a 1998 Jaguar XJ8 he had the same problem one side of the bonnet opened one didn't if you look inside the wheel well there are a couple of small holes in the top towards the hood, look for the hole in line with the catch and get a long stiff wire, screwdriver etc and you have to fish around in the hole until you hit the spring that un catches the hook, when you open it look at the catch that is supposed to hold it in place we had to put a piece of wire wrapped in a figure 8 to hold the cable in place so this didnt keep happening but it worked sucessfully, be patient it took us about 2 hours to get it

Here is another thread with photos (see post #60 also read post #57):

thanks to the members here my hood is fixed,but I have another issue.After hitting a speed bump too fast my sister ran into trans problems.I have reverse and high gear but no low 2,3,4.It is a '98 VandenPlas V-8with the auto or direct shift.I only need to know if anyone else has had this experience.This was my mother's car,and when she passed it became my sister's.It has been parked for 18 months.The more I work and clean up this car the more I love it.I don't have alot of money,but Ireally want to keepit.107,000 miles on odometer

Sorry to hear that, bob. You might want to start a new thread for this problem. It sounds like the ECU has put the car into limp home mode. Isn't there a warning flashing? One thing you might try easily is a hard reset: Disconnect the negative battery cable and short it to the positive post for about 30 sec. You will probably have to have the stored codes read if that isn't helpful. One of your local parts stores will check the codes.

P1722 Transmission stall speed failure, default action: When fault is detected – TCM adopts transmission electronic limp home mode (5th gear) – ECM limits engine power;
possible causes: Transmission oil level low, Selector cable adjustment / installation incorrect, Output speed sensor problem, (Refer to P0721 Possible Causes), Transmission mechanical failure.

P1730 Gear control malfunction – 1st,2nd, 3rd and/or 4th ; default action: When fault is detected - TCM adopts transmission electronic limp home mode (5th gear) – ECM limits engine power; possible causes: Transmission oil level low, Output speed sensor problem, (Refer to P0721 Possible Causes), Input speed sensor problem (Refer to P0715 Possible Causes), Transmission mechanical failure.

Engine DTC P1000 System checks not complete since last memory clear;
MONITORING CONDITIONS: If DTC P1000 is logged in memory, the on-board diagnostic tests “SERVICE DRIVE CYCLE” have not been completed.
