Default Glass chip repair - considering using a DIY kit, anyone experienced in this?

Small chip (a few mm) but exactly in my line of site

I am considering buying http://www.amazon.com/Fix---Flat--Wi.../dp/B000EA5WLS but cannot really tell if the good reviews are sincere or just marketing-spam.

Anyone use this or another product to recommend?

I have had the professional fix done quite a few times - especially on our fleet cars. I got a hit last fall on a window that was less than a week old -- so I bought one of the kits thinking I would fix it. The spot was in an out of the way place but was big and I was afraid that it would start to crack. After looking over the kit and reading up on it I took it to a glass shop. With the size of the "pit" I was working with I knew it would crack if I did not get enough glue into the area - The glass shop had trouble and it was not as invisible as I had hoped - but it has not cracked.

On the really small hits with little or no star cracks the pros can make these almost undetectable. The device they use has enough power to fully force the glue into the small hole - this is lacking in the home kits. If your glass is in really good shape and you need a perfect fix to keep the glass I would say don't use the kit. It depends on how much the mark will annoy you.

Normally the glass shops will try to make the repair and if you are not satisfied they will not charge you if you then then have the glass replaced.

I have tried one of those kits on my daily driver, I would not waste my money again. Most insurance will pay for a professional fix if not new glass, just check with your company.

I have high deductible policies so the insurance route is not an option -- but some companies have one call direct pay for the chip fix.

They will come to your house

Umm, comprehensive insurance on a 2002 car?! Definitely not with NYC rates...

What does it cost for the pro job? So nobody has had good luck with the kits?

We live in Connecticut and have full glass coverage on our auto insurance policy. We have had windshield damage twice since we owned the XJ8. Our insurance paid 100% of the repair cost (no deductable). The first repair required a new windshield. The second time (small nick) we had a professional glass service repair the windshield at our residence. The full glass coverage is provided by the insurance company at no additional premium. We have Liability, Medical payments, Uninsured motorists, and Damage to your Auto (other than Collision and Collision with $1000 deductable). The annual premium is $533.
You should contact your insurance company to find out the cost of adding full glass coverage.

Coverage in the city is more expensive -- also depends on the limits chosen.

NY and NJ - very $$$

Some have 15k other 2 million.

I am not bothering with insurance, certainly not for a little nick. How much is a pro job out-of-pocket?

My rates are about 1/6th of what friends from my neighborhood pay - no idea why they offered such great price to me but I have no intention of giving them a reason to raise me...

Sorry - I forgot to add the chip repair price.

A couple of years ago I was paying around $50.00 -- a few months ago everybody was now charging around 60-70. I would call a few glass shops - they all do the chips.

I've used a diy kit myself on several occasions and have always been satisfied. My only goal was to prevent discoloration and spreading of any cracks. Perfection and total undetectability has not been had, however a smooth fully filled breach has been my experience The sooner you attend to this, the better! As with anything else done for others by profession, this done with proper preparation and patients should turn out well for you
