Default Gluing a broken cup holder?

Has anyone tried to glue a broken cup holder shut? I don't use it since it won't hold a drink anyway and think it would look much better permanently shut. I tried super glue but it wouldn't stick. Any suggestions?

There is a 2-part epoxy made for plastic called plastic weld. It works quite well.

Get a console lid from a 1988 to 1992 XJ40 and have it dyed to color match your interior.
They did not have cupholders and will fit the console.

I found a spot to use a small sheet metal screw to secure it until I get around to doing a proper repair.

I cut up a thin strip of berilium copper springy material to make a reinforcing piece small enough and strong enough to go round where the 'hinge' broke when I got the car. I epoxied the 'clip' I made onto the plastic, having roughed it up to key it first....works really well - if you take the mechanism apart, be careful not drop the two really small cogs that run on the toothed rod affair against the return springs.....ask me how I know that...LOL Allan

For anyone who wants to replace instead of repair, Jaguar supply a Cup Holder Repair Kit Part Number GNA7692AB

Gluing a broken cup holder?-cup-holder.jpg

(click on the image to enlarge it)

Current cost (Aug 2013) £96.26 or $150.24. Expensive but a lot less than a full console lid.

Definitely a good option, however, if I had a spare £96 I can always find something else that needs doing on the car....so fixing works for me...Allan

Thanks for all the advise. I like quick and easy so I think I will try the epoxy first.

don't glue any broken plastic.
Get an electric soldering iron for electrical work, cost maybe $10 everywhere and anywhere. Then get some scrap plastic and plastic weld it all up see
best regards
Peter

Some-one should find the person responsible for the Cupholder (and ashtray) and slap him on the head!!
Or you could use two Velcro spots glued appropriately so it could be reversed if you find 96 quid one day.

Watch ebay. I bought a replacement. Easy enough. (I still pretend it is a $68,000 car).
I think I paid about $100. I am VERY careful with the new one.

My cup holder works fine but now it's wanting to open when I hit a bump or prop my elbow there a little too hard.

I permanently super glued mine shut. I had to use a bungy cord to keep it tight while it dried overnight though. The super glue wouldn't dry fast enough to hold it without the bungy cord overnight. I like it much better glued shut. And I found that I can stick my drink in the hole between the passenger seat and center console right where the seat belt buckle is located. It holds it just fine even under hard braking.
