Thank you for posting pics of the sunroof panel removal, that is very helpful. I know what I'm doing this weekend

But I found it easiest to take it out the rear opening as well in my swb XJR. I just had to roll it up a bit more than you did, but it's not an issue at all with the flexible material that the shell is made of.

One note for others doing this. Leave material around the sunroof opening. You have to glue the material to the top face of the sunroof frame to finish it around the sunroof opening.

Hi
Today i remove the headliner, is not possible to take it out without bending. Is made from fiber glass, i remove the headrest from the back and front seat driver side. I wait to receive the insulator material and next week i will finish the job.
I forget the camera at home but i take some pictures whit my phone.
I was surprise to find that are no reinforcement on the roof
I help a friend of mine to change at his car the front shocks absorbers, a BMW E46

Hi
This is the color of the material. It feels like a peach when you touch the material. Insulating material will come tomorrow, I'll make a movie before mounting and after.

I hope to look nice in the end.
The most important for me is the insulator material, the summer is near and the car is black. At the moment i drive the car without the headliner, if i keep the car a few minutes in the sun the inside temperature increase rapidly. After this upgrade i hope to see an improvement. It is my first black car, the BMW was Beige metallic, the best color ever for my taste. If i wash the car today, tomorrow the car will look like before washing, full of dust.
After a lots of calls in found on stock this material
Standartplast SPL04 Accesorii instalare Insonorizare Standartplast
three foil 75x100cm four mm thickness, i need only two
The seller told me it is a good material and is made in Russia.
The price is 50 USD for 2.25 sq meter about 24.21 Sq Feet. For our car we need 1.35 sq meter about 14.53 Sq Feet am i right in US size?

That sounds right. I had material that was 62" wide and I used about 2.5-2.75 yards. Keep in mind my car is a long wheel base VDP.

Im tackling this tomorrow morning.

How do you remove the grab handles and those 2 "clips" with the square opening on the rear of the headliner by the rear window? Im guessing with everything else, as far as trim and such I just need to remove the felt surround and pop clips to remove the trim on the front and rear pillars correct?

Thank you,

Chris

I too am planning on doing Alcantara or something of that nature. Did you say your interior is oatmeal? That is what mine is, but Im thinking if I went dark like that, I would have to have the sun visors and sunglass holder recovered as well.

Thanks!

Chris

No problem Chris. For the grab handles you need to pry off the chrome covers to the side. For me it was easiest to use a flat head screw driver and insert it between the handle itself and the plastic it is connected to. At that point you can push the covers out from the inside. The bolt behind them is a star pattern I believe, but I used an allen key. The squares in the rear window use a phillips screw-driver but they require the use of a flat head screw driver to lift the plastic flaps covering the phillips head screw. Other than that pull off the felt trim and pop out the surrounding trims. ONE WORD OF CAUTION THOUGH. I do not recommend completely removing the rear pillars. Loosen them by pulling out the peripheral clips, but dont try to pull them all the way off. You dont need to and there is a clip under the dome light that is very easy to break. I broke one and then just slid the headliner forward to avoid removing them further. Good luck!!

Badbenz94 sun visors and sunglass holder are the easy parts to refurbish, first i will install the headliner, if i like the contrast i will keep them in oatmeal color.

Yesterday i put the insulator on the roof, it makes a big difference, i have rain all day and now is more quiet inside.

Today we will have sun so i will check how is in the sun with this material on the sun roof. Saturday i will glue the material on the headliner, i will keep it out for a few days after the glue and next Saturday i will install on the car.

This material make a huge differences. When i go inside the car in this morning was very hot at least 35 Celsius, in a few seconds about 30 after i start the AC was cool and all this without headliner.

Got mine out today....broke one clip on the rear panel with the courtesy light unfortunately its the panel itself, so I am hoping it will be ok without it.

Too if anyone is doing this and it comes apart like mine did(complete separation), tape or use other means to keep the fabric on the board as I have glue now on the leather and carpeting and am trying to remove it.

And like everyone else with a SWB, it has to be folded, no ifs, ands or buts.

That is all for now, progress will be reported as it happens. (not really smiling as Im mad as hell about the glue....anyway)

And a big thank you to 69merccougar and gabrielbecheanu for the pictorial and assistance in this job!

I need to remove the second part of the sunroof, got the large piece out easily enough...I tried to slid it all the way back and remove the two rubber gromets at the end, however it looks like it is still hitting the drains that are glued on nicely. Any way around that or am I doing it incorrectly?

EDIT, I think I found the solution here....I will update on my sucess

Thank you again!

Chris

PS I was able to remove the glue with a microfiber cloth, some water and patience.

Sounds like that clip behind the courtesy light broke on you too. It seems to be fine without it. Good job and I'm glad to hear you got the glue off!

Thanks to all to take the time posting pictures.
This is something we will all face sooner or later, good to see it is not too complicated.

It's actually the clip closest to the door opening. I'm hoping that with the grab handle and pinch modeling it will be ok. I didn't attempt to go any further after reading your warning.

I'm glad no one else had complete headliner failure like I did. It was an absolute mess.. Shop vac and a lot of clean up lol

Haha yeah that sounds like a mess Chris. I was detailing the car the other day and found a yellow smear from the old headliner glue on one of the pillars. Took a little time, but it came off. Thankfully I didn't have to vacuum too much. I believe the P/O tried to reglue the back at one point without dropping the headliner so it stayed together around the edges decently.
