Headliner reupholster
Hello all, I am sure sooner or later we will ALL have to tackle this issue, for me, it is sooner, as in like, now! I understand that I can order the materials necessary online for a reasonable price, a local upholstery shop wants $200 for the material, glue, and cleaner, whilst not too unreasonable, I don't really want to spend that much doing it.
I know that "headliner material" has a foam backing, my question is, if I redo it, I was thinking of using just a bolt of cloth from a local fabric store, and just using 3M number 77 to spray it and glue it on, has anyone ever done it this way? Will this work or is this just a terrible idea?
The reason I though of doing it this way is because the fabric is rather affordable priced ($5.00 per yard!)
Also, would it be much trouble to also re do the sunglass thing that folds out and the sunroof?
Any ideas are much appreciated! Thanks!

Regular fabric will probably allow the glue to soak through, and the foam helps hide irregularities in the fiber backer board, so my vote is that is a TERRIBLE idea. Even doing it yourself, for the effort involved, you want it to be right afterward.
The materials should cost about $45. for the fabric, $12.00 for the glue and I have no idea what "cleaner they may be selling you. You will need a stiff bristle brush to clean up the fiberboard of all of the degraded foam.
Look online. And, the archives have some sources that can almost exactly match the Jaguar colors.

I totally agree with Ross. I paid $68 on-line for the headliner and glue. You don't need a cleaner, just a stiff brush and a vacuum. The adhesive will bleed thru a thin fabric and look horrible.
For the amount of work to get the headboard out you don't want to use thin material. NOTE: leave plenty of extra material (overhang) at the cut out for the sunroof until you put the headliner back in place. It is needed to wrap around the sunroof opening and tuck behind the trim molding

I've only seen it done one time, and I never got to see the final result on that method, so I have no idea.
Any recommendations on where to get the material?
Also, the interior colour is cashmere (SDZ), and I want a colour that could compliment this to have a two tone thing going on.
Thanks

Terrible idea.
You can buy headliner material cheaper, probably from Amazon or your local auto parts shop. However, you need to use proper foam backed material, not just cloth. If you use cloth you will wind up with a glue soaked / stained, wrinkled mess.

This might seem like an equally bad idea, but just popped into my mind, I don't know if it exists, but what about some kind of high heat resistant double sided tape and a length of broadcloth?
Seriously? C'mon you are driving a VandenPlas. What are you so intent on saving $50 bucks only to have your car look like a junked up ghetto-cruiser.
For the short term, look on Amazon for some headliner retaining pins and just tack up the original. Then save up a few bucks until you can have the job done properly. Properly is not with duct tape and fabric from WalMart.
