Default Heating/cooling

Hi, have a 1999 XJ8, very good condition, except that the heating/cooling system is very slow to react. By this I mean that if I set the thermostat to 72*F, on a hot day it will try to freeze me for about 20 minutes, before cutting back on the cold, and on a cold day it will stay fully hot for about 20 minutes.
I think there may be crud in the interior air sniffer, and would like to clean it. Tried to research it on the forums, but only advice was to blow compressed air through it. I would prefer to take it apart to clean it, but can't figure out how to remove the face plate without breaking it. Any advice would be appreciated.
thanks
Pete

If you look in the JTIS, it appears you pretty much have to take the dash apart. I have similar issues, and would like to check out and clean the cabin temp sensor. It's not clear to me how you tell if the little sniffer motor is working.

Smile heating/cooling

Thanks for quick reply Boomer. I have downloaded JTIS, but can't get it working properly. Might have to put up with problem until I have to pull dash apart.
