Default Help asap please!!!

Just got out of the car to grab something and When I got back into it....I didnt quite crank it all the way. So then I restarted the car and heard and an awful noise coming from the engine and now the engine is misfiring and in restricted power mode... Ive reset the battery with no luck there...

Any ideas?? the car has been running great up until this....

Its a 2000 XJR with 118k miles...

Thanks,

Sinatrakat

Define 'Awful Noise'

Check Engine Light?

Did you start it and cut it off? If so see the XK8/R FAQ alphabetically under 'Engine'.

More info please.

I cranked it but didnt start it.....then re cranked it and thats when the rumbling noise started and then it went into Limp Mode.... Check engine light is on...but I dont have a code reader.... Do the tensioners go out on cranking a lot?? If so whats the chances I got lucky and its the cheaper of the two to replace?? The car still runs , but in limp mode and very ruff..

Thanks,

Sinatrakat

No check engine light? Possible that your starter took some teath out of the torque convertor or is still semi engaged?

I haven't experienced this, but this sounds like it might have had the timing chain jump a tooth or worse yet a couple. Did you ever have the tensioners replaced?

Secondary tensioners replaced?

If the car will get to an auto parts store have the codes read.

Otherwise pull the valve covers and we will provide further information.

I think Test and Mid are pointing you in the right direction, sorry to say this sounds mechanical. The tensioners if plastic are definitely culprits - it's a case of now confirming if one or both have let go. I just hope that running after failure hasn't damaged valves. Fingers crossed.

The good thing - there's plenty of info one here to replace them and get you back up and running, it isn't a big job.

Just be glad you weren't travelling at high speed when it happened.....

Update when you know more and good luck.

I think MID is right..... If it did jump a tooth.... due to it happening when it was cranking....is it a matter of just replacing the tensioner...??? ...because it still cranks and runs, can I assume that the motor is still savable?? I am taking it to the dealer on Monday... Thanks for all the responses guys....

Dealer . . . do you not have a personal independent Jaguar technician?

You might want to reevaluate driving the car anywhere. Phase I: car runs rough, Phase II: car bends a valve at a cost of several thousand dollars.

Everything you described says 'CAM CHAIN SKIPPED A TOOTH'.
