HELP! Hooked up my 92mm Maf, IAT reading -40 when it is +80

Can IAT sensors spontaneously die?
I wired my 92mm Pro-M Maf the same as before, with the IAT sensor lead to the stock Orange MAF wire and one to ground.
My IAT is reading -40 if it is hooked up or if it is not. This sensor worked before when wired in the same way.
I think a big clue here is that the IAT is reading -40 both if the sensor is hooked up or not. So I've ordered a new sensor, and will re wire it to check for good connections. I'll also use a meter on the sensor and see what I get.
My question is do these things spontaneously die occasionally?
