HELP Understanding Security Features

Just bought XJ8 1997/8 and when unlocking/locking have no flashing from turn indicators, no beeps or chirps from car like I had from my previous XJ8 1998. which had a security alarm fitted. Have lights/sounds somehow been disabled? Looked on VCATS and it had SLM LNC2600LB/001 but when I quoted the VIN Number to JAG agent I was told that my car as built has no security alarm fitted though it does seem to have a sounder unit up by radiator. Then what then does the SLM do??? and what would need to be changed/modified to have a security alarm on this car? Many thanks in advance for any help.
