Question Help!! VVT apart and wont go back togather

I was changing the timing chains and guides on my 98 XJ8 and I accidently removed the the four torx bolts the held the VVT hub togather. The gear is two pieces and the splines will not match both the VVT hub and the camshaft at the same time. I have read alot about this piece and it seem that no one has taken this type of VVT apart. I have included pictures of the VVT hub and gear. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

When I worked at the Jag dealer years ago, one of the mechanics in the shop removed the bolts on a VVT unit and it 'sprang-apart'. He tried a re-assemble and got the engine back together. When he cranked-it-up he bent several valves and had to pull the head off that side. I don't know if he got the timing wrong or if the VVT unit was the cause???

He ordered another cylinder head and VVT unit, re-assembled the engine and went on with his life. Jaguar warranty was NOT happy with his method of repair.

I have not disassembled one but make sure it is correct and operates normally when you get it back together.

good luck

Thanks for the info. That exactly what I don't want to happen. I am thinking it may be just better to buy a used vvt unit that's already togather. Again thanks for the help.

Be AWARE!!!!!!!!!!!!!! that there are TWO different VVT units for the 4.0 V8.

You need the AJ26 unit (1997/98 XK8 or 1998 XJ8).

You have the two position VVT and the later engines use the continuously variable units.
They are NOT interchangeable!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Bob, again thanks for all the help. Would you happen to know where I can get one of the vvt units?

Try ebay, 707 auto parts and Coventry West.
