I agree, I don’t think it can jump out. Eventually it could wear out, but now that I have holes to gain access to the latch, I’m happy. I’ll have to wait for my eBay latch to get here, but I can do the passenger side and get the new holes plugged.

 

There are clips with sharp metal tangs that you could put over the top. When i have a min i'll look for a pic or link
