how do you unclip this hose clamp??

Put a pocket screwdriver in the little slot and pry the metal lip off the tab. (rock the screwdriver and the clip will unlock)
I use 'noodle-nose' pliers to squeeze the clamp closed when I attach the hose.

I tried that but i guess did it wrong / with insufficient force.
I've broken a few plastic nipples and breather hoses so I guess I'm being too shy / gentle.
