Default How good is Rotella T6?

I'm tempted by the $20 a gallon price tag to use Shell Rotella T6 with a 6k service interval.

Anyone care to weigh in?

Thanks

Eric

You can check around.

It's a highly regarded oil. So, if it suits your vehicle requirements, why not?

On the previous change, I ran the conventional Rotella 15W40.

That was replaced recently with Rotella 0W40.

Don't see much difference at current temperatures and may return to the 15W40 if cranking is not significantly different when sub-zero temperatures hit.

T6 is indeed a great oil. Don't be swayed by the price, though, as it's about the same price as every other synthetic oil. Shell sells in 4qt jugs whereas most oil comes in 5.28qt jugs, so in the end the price is within a couple bucks. The reason to use it is because it's good, rather than because it's cheap.

There are several threads on T6 on bobistheoilguy, and if you hunt around on various turbocar forums you'll see some more positive feedback. You might also consider Motul 6100 (semi) 8100 (full) or LiquiMoly as other high-quality, reasonably priced oils. Amazon has a good price on Motul, and AutoHausAZ on LiquiMoly.

Well it's in and everything is still humming along.

My biggest concern was buying an oil I can find almost anywhere and wasn't stupid expensive. I can also use the same oil in my wife's Discovery.

I also wanted to make sure its high detergent content and intended purpose of lubricate Diesel engines wouldn't be an issue.

So far so good. I'll report back in about six months.

Thanks

Eric

I've been using Rotella in all my old school (flat tappet) engines for decades. Great stuff. Although it's primarily promoted as being a diesel oil, it's equally suited to spark engines. This is why it has been dual-rated by API in both C (compression) and S (spark) categories.

I guess it's kind of late to ask but could there be an issue with the catalytic converters?

Thanks

What kind of car are you using this in? Your avatar shows an Alpine or Tiger.
