Default How to install a hard-wired radar detector.

Hi all, just thought my experience may be of use to someone. I have a Valentine One. I also have the Wiring Harness Connector and the Direct Wire Power adaptor.https://store.valentine1.com/Store/partsdept.asp

I first used a fine-pointed test light to find a lead, and be sure to find a lead which switches on/off with the ignition, if it's on all the time it's not a pro setup.

Once you have a lead, run the included telephone cable along the transmission tunnel, if you have heated seats run it under that console (otherwise, I would run the wire under the floormats, I never take those out anyway).

Then, run it under the trim in the transmission tunnel trim (pry it just a bit, and jam the wire underneath.) and then run it under the steering column, and then run it over to the A-pillar.

The Material covering the A-C pillars prys of easily, but don't remove it totally (that's unnecessary). Then just run the wire underneath it along the A-pillar.

Then, just run the wire out to the rearview mirror, just set the wire in the car between the headlining and the windscreen glass. Attached are a couple of pictures of what I'm talking about.

Scratch the photos, I can't get them off my cell camera.

You could probably get power to turn this thing on from the sunroof control module if you need power up front with very little wire running. Does it get power and ground through the phone cable that it comes with? I am unfamiliar with this one! Thanks!

The phone cable is grounded by a small ground wire at the tip where the source of power is... once I can get pictures I'll put them on sorry . I didn't think to wire up there, the trim is a little hard to get off. And the fuse box being in the trunk is a pain, normally the fuse panel is the best power source: like in the XK8 a hardwire was easy; the fuse panel is right below the a pillar (This system can use a wire tap or a fuse insert, or a cigarette lighter).

056= Location of hard-wired detector
057= Route of wire, starting at removable panel beneath rear, driver's side seat.

Adaptor/ Connector are the ones mentioned in my first post, the connector just clamps around a sheathed lead.
link is in my prev. post. All but the adaptor (I believe) is included with the $399 purchase price of V1.

I did that in my F-150 and my wife's car too. I just found a "hot when ignition on" wire in the overhead map lights and ran it right out the front at the rear view mirror. Very neat install and only about 12" of wire. I'm going to try the same set up on my XJR, I'll let you know how it goes.

I just hard wired my valentine yesterday in my 2002 XJR
I bought the hard wire kit on ebay for $8.95
VALENTINE ONE V1 RADAR HARD WIRE POWER CORD KIT w/ FUSE | eBay

Then it was a 10 minute job, there are a few 12V + that are only hot when the key is in the run mode, located in the overhead control panel where the sunroof switch is located. No need to run a wire down the piller, I just used a 12 inch wire, very easy and clean.
Just use a meter or a simple test light to locate them.

I wired my V1 off the sunroof control module. Piece of cake and you just run a short cable.

Which wire in the sunroof panel should I tap into?

Just a quick note that the "laser" feature only tells you that you just got a laser ticket as the instant that beam touches your car, you are busted.

Buy one of these and change the balance of power.

Not in my experience, unless you are the lead car in the pack or the only one on the road. Otherwise, my laser detector picks up the beam as they are shooting the cars ahead and gives me some warning.
