How long until emission computers gather enough information?
Hi all, if you haven't seen my posts lately, I bought a 2000 XJ8 which had a few problems. One of those was a discharged battery. Obviously to recharge it I needed to disconnect it and take it to AutoZone, so this reset the computers.
I drove the car 250 miles and the catalytic system data is still available. Neither is EVAP. Both show up as "X" on the vehicle reader. So I can't pass the smog check. How long do I have to keep driving until those systems show up?

Typically about 1/2 -1 tank of gas is enough to put the car through all its cycles. You need a variety of driving conditions to get it through the cycles, so just keep driving. Do some around town and freeway. I would have thought you'd have driven enough by now.
I already did 1 and 1/2 tank of gas and still nothing. Around 30-ish gallons of fuel. I also drove the car all weekend like suggested, on the highway and city. I did around 5 hours on the highway straight, then idled for about an hour a day for two days, then drove in stop and go traffic for about 3 hours, then drove in the city for about a couple hours a day for two days in a row. Trip A on the message center says "252.3". Should I make it to 300? The smog guy today said it might not even work with 400 miles.
Given they have nine lives…
Sorry, I know that’s no help at all but I couldn’t resist.

My car throws an occasional P0420 check engine light for the left side cat. Drive a few tanks of gas and it usually goes out on its own, most of my driving if highway.
So the cats may take quite awhile, but all I have is mo own personal experience...when I've reset the battery and put any of my vehicles into test mode again, they've all either cleared properly or thrown a new trouble code within 1 tank of gas.

Obviously. But I'm not looking for trouble. I just want the car to pass the smog test.
Sorry haha. I am probably not making myself clear. There are no codes because the system, Cat, has not gathered enough information to show any. The systems cannot show codes if there is not enough information to determine whether or not there are any errors.
again the answer is a while if you just drive it. 2000 means only evap can be not ready they don't care about ccm. do the monitoring set conditions for a p0420\430 every time you use the vehicle

I am confused: when you read the OBD II log, are any codes showing? You should be seeing P1000 if you are not ready for emission testing; P1111 if you are good to go! If you see neither, you have an issue with the OBDII plug or your reader.
It shows P1000.
