Default I thought changing the fuel filter would be easy...

But what a mission it turned out to be for me. I had the rear tired removed the car up on a jack stand and i just couldnt even remove that little bolt that holds the filter bracket in place. I tried about 10to difrent sockets on that damn little bolt ranging from 6,7 1/2, 8, 9, and 10mm and none seem to fit. The only one that fit more or less was the 8mm and still it ended up striping the bolt so i couldnt even get it out. Also tried loosening the 2 fuel line nuts and there wasnt even any clearance to turn the wrench with the muffler pipe and other parts in the way. 2 hours later after wrestling with that one little screw i gave up. I guess ill have to take it to a shop to get it off and get charged an arm and a leg.

I did mine in about 5 minutes on a lift. That rounded bolt is going to make it super fun for whoever gets to do it though Since 8mm rounded it, you might be able to beat on a 7mm or a 9/32" Good luck!

Heh heh....if it's as hard as you say, maybe the shop deserves every penny they charge, eh? :-)

Actually, I dread changing the fuel filter myself. I've found that, if working on my back, the task needs to be approached (litteraly) from several different angles and even then I have to hold my tongue just right.

For the bracket I use 1/4" drive sockets with a flex joint.

New fuel bracket bolt is probably available at your local Jaguar dealership parts dept, part number is AJ88941 and its retail price is $3.55. The fuel bracket is held in place with 2 of these bolts.

It was easy. I was worried about overtighetning. Of course I had the exle and exhaust out of the car.

I changed mine a couple of months back, and did it with the car on a jack stand. It's not a difficult task, it just takes time because access is rather limited unless you have the car on a lift, or have axle and exhaust removed

I took the fuel pressure out with the valve on the fuel rail, but had a little problem afterwards as the valve got stuck open... I wonder if it's ok to depressurize the fuel system by taking fuel pump fuse(s) out, and letting the engine run until it dies. This is what I used to do with my previous car, and it's a lot less messy that way.

That is just fine for depressurization. A good idea, really! I do it whenever its easy to get to the fuel pump relay. I am not sure where the relay is on these cars though!

Thanks for the help guys. My problem so far has been removing the filter braket. I see on the braket there's 3 screws/bolts holding it in place. I have been trying to remove the center bolt. My question is do i just need to remove that center one or the 2 on the side or all 3i of them in order to free the filter. With limited clearence under themy car is hard for me to see wich ones need to come off.

Trunk fuse box. The XJ8 has one relay. The XJR has two relays. You have a choice of removing the fuse(s) or relay(s).

You will find that a LED flashlight and mirror are quite helpful in situations like this.

Jim mentions that there are 2 bolts ... are you sure you see 3?

There's 3 in total. 2 hold the bracket to the bottom of the car and the 3rd one holds the part of the bracket that hugs the filter in place.

This one causes seasoned tech's cold sweats, in the UK salted roads cause this thing to become a rusted up mess....I made a stainless bracket + used ss bolts.

@newuser - undo the fuel lines to/from the filter, then the 'hug' bolt, it should slide out, and the new one slides in. Hopefully the rubber insulator will stay in place.

That center bolt is precisely the one i tried to remove to slide the filter out. Howevthe after trying several difrent size sockets looking por the proper fit i think i may have rounded it a bit and it wont come out. Next time i vet under there i will try removing the other 2 bolts to get the whole thing out.

If it took 2 hours and you still failed to accomplish the task without removing other parts in the way. You might as well have removed the exhaust and probably took less time lol. I'd say just remove the drivers side rear third of the exhaust and get your clearance for accessing your now semi stripped bolt (which I believe is a 7mm). I changed mine when replacing fuel pumps and removing the tank. I fussed with it for an hour then removed the exhaust for clearance and had much more success. Good luck

Shoot, that how I do it anyway: disconnect fuel pipes, remove 2 nuts holding bracket to car, take filter and bracket, still assembled, to my workbench, transfer filter, reinstall.

<shrug>

With the bracket out of the car you'll be able to deal with the rounded-off fastener very easily
