Hello, guys. How is you engine knock, any changes?
Mine is still the same as it was.

Couple of weeks ago I went to a Jaguar specialist, who checked my engine sound on cold start and said, that there is nothing to worry about the knock and in his opinion this sound comes from.. the transmission.

He also advised me to change the engine oil from 5W40 to 10W40 - it was a good idea, engine runs better on cold, the VVT noise has gone away.

Best regards,
Krzysztof / Chris

Default XKR start up knock

I to have had the knock since owning my 01 XKR. Have tried it all, new tensioners, compressor oil etc. The other day while changing oil in my 57 Ford and of course adding ZDP zinc additive a must pressure additive for flat tappet engines since zinc has been removed from most oils except some racing formulas. I thought maybe this would help the Jag. Added a bottle without even changing the oil. Since then the noise has diminished at least 75% and seems to be getting better every time. I get my ZDP from Eastwood, about $8 a bottle. Worth a try ! Thanks Tom.

Thanks for advice, Terrific. Could you also tell us on which oil is your XKR running?
I've changed my oil back from 10w40 to 5w40 and engine runs better on cold, but I hear a little tapping when it's hot (normaln working temperature). But only I can hear it, haha
Maybe I will try thad ZDDP additive, but it is hard to buy it in Europe..

Hi; Having never had an engine failure due to oil in over 60 years of driving I've stuck with conventional 10/40 quality motor oil. There are several brands of racing oils that contain zinc pressure additives such as Kendall GT-1. Thought I'd try ZDDP as I had some on hand for my older cars. Good luck.

That is not quite accurate.

The level has been reduced, but the additive has not been removed.

For the '57 Ford, you might want to look at the specs for Castrol 5W50
"forumulated for classic vehicles". It has a high level of ZDDP.

On the Ford, you might check that oil galleries in the rocker arms have not "soldered" over. Common problem with that floating rocker arm design - cost me a ton back 50 years ago.
