As I said, it wasn't my best negotiating. I am much better at selling stuff than at buying it! lol.
I told him $8,000 was my number (which it was) and that I was factoring in tires and brakes. He said that was too low, he didn't want to go down that much. Then he pulled an awesome "salesman" maneuver. I am a sales manager and as soon as he said it I told him that he had just done an excellent job of closing the sale.
He said "You know you'll be making that 5 hour drive back to N.C. tonight and thinking to yourself "for just an extra $500 I could be driving home in an XJR right now".
I laughed out loud when he said it because it was an excellent sales approach, and because he was right! haha.

When you add what I paid for my last XJR and what I paid for parts to get it into the condition this one is already in, it's about the same amount of money. I have no regrets so far.
This 2002 was built on Sep. 24th, 2001 and the engine number is MA 0109141747. From my extensive research that means the engine was built on Sept. 14th, 2001 -- just ten days before the car was assembled. As I understand it, the timing gear upgrade was on all engines built after Aug. 13th, 2001 meaning my car has the upgraded timing gear. The valve cover gaskets are new and they don't leak any oil OR air, so I am hesitant to remove them. With a stethoscope, the upper tensioner area sounds sewing machine smooth and there is no rattle at start-up. I am feeling fairly confident I don't need to worry about timing gear problems; unless someone sees a flaw in my research???

Getting a car that's been taken care of is worth a bit extra if it's the car you want. And yeah, that guy was right. You would've been kicking yourself all the way home for losing it over $500.

I am very happy. This one has the supercharger pulley upgrade and tonight I changed the supercharger fluid. Got about 7.7 ounces out!! Not bad. I used the draw tube from one of my wife's tall perfume bottles attached to a larger tube attached to the syringe. Took right at 8 full ounces to re-fill it. The old fluid looked and smelled pretty bad, but at 99,000 miles it's not horribly past due for changing I guess.

I have decided that I've gotten pretty much all I want off of my 03 XJR parts car. I think I'm going to sell it as a whole so please keep an eye on the classified part of this forum if anyone is interested. The valuable parts that are left are:
1) Good running engine and supercharger
2) MB transmission, also working great
3) ECU - car computer
4) Quiet and smooth differential
Etc. Etc. Etc.
I will get some pictures later today and post it for sale in the proper section.

I just sold my other "baby" a few weeks ago, the BMW convertible that I've pampered for the last nine years. The money from that sale is sitting in the bank while I was figuring out what to do with it. I'm curious to see what the insurance company will say the XJR was worth; certainly less than I have in it!
I would love to find a nice low mileage XJR, or maybe even a really nice 2002 or 2003 XKR coupe. Maybe I should just not buy another car. I'm still trying to think clearly. The accident happened a little after 6pm, about two hours ago.

1) Valuation report from 1 of 3 companies in the US so request a copy and check that it is correct
2) Condition of the vehicle which you can prove via photos and receipts of parts and repair work
3) Market value of the vehicle based on the sale prices of similar vehicles sold in the area in the last few months which you can also argue with your own examples
4) Knowledge of the crooked system meant to scam you from your pay out and your willingness to fight. Never settle for the first offer.
Good luck! Remember their intent is to protect their interests and minimize payouts.

They paid me for the car about 6 weeks ago. I have to give credit to USAA, they paid me enough to cover what I paid for the car and all of the work/parts I put into it. They certainly did not over-pay me! However, I can't accuse them of being unfair. They paid me enough to buy a suitable replacement, which is what insurance is supposed to do.

They gave you a very fair value -- do they provide "agreed value"? ... some companies will .. others require an appraisal.
My like is a bit complex ..so I have Chubb and they will do it on a percentage basis -- mine are insured for 18k each.

That car has been listed forever. I was calling them about going to see it once but they were so vague and seemingly disinterested in selling the car I just crossed it off the list. The guy on the phone actually told me they weren't really interested in selling the car they just use it to attract customers.
I bought a great XJR 6 days after the other was totaled, so I am not in the market anymore.
