Default Installation - New Double Din Stereo - Bluetooth/Navman

Hi,

I am in Brisbane Australia and trying to find an after market solution to replace the standard stereo in my 98XJ Sport with a new stereo (double din) with Navigation/Bluetooth capability. Does anyone have an ideas? So far the car stereo outlets in Bris suggest it will be hard to get a new stereo to fit and they can't find a dashkit/faceplate on the market in Aus to suit a 98 Jag to help fit a new stereo. They are suggesting a parrot or a Navman with blue tooth functionality which are not ideal in my mind.

Thanks.

You need to do a search...

A double din won't fit unless you cut a metal bracket behind the headunit, and even then it's a tough fit.
General consensus is that single din looks ugly, and you'll have to make a custom surround. There are a couple of other options, like getting a double din headunit and separating the screen from the body and remote mounting it, or running a tablet, which is looking like the best option these days.
There are also a couple of adapter solutions, if you just want to run ipod or aux input, such as this
iP-JAGCD iPod Adapter for Select Jaguar with CD Auto Changer :: iPod Adapters & Interfaces

Whilst I don't doubt you have the skills to do this, I think it's still a waste of time. You'd be much better off putting that time and effort into a tablet solution that you could potentially sell on to the rest of us

I will not deny I have considered the tablet route, I may yet change my mind when I get that far...... The tablet does tick a lot of boxes and you can get them cheap enough...... I will ponder that one

That is exactly what I was looking for when I gave up and installed a single din. I read that you could splice into the wiring to get ipod connectivity, but I didn't want to perform something that can't be reversed easily. So I chose to install a single din. Also, I wanted a connection like the one in the link has versus an AUX input from the ipod's headphone jack. Does anyone know what sort of quality that adapter is? Now I'm tempted to re-install the factory radio and changer and run it this way. Any thought? Would it be worth it, or stick to the set-up I have now?

Ah the joys of this forum... took me a while but I found the original post!

No idea what it's like for quality, but if it uses proper Ipod and AI-net connectors then I'd expect it to be better than using the headphone jack

I did contact someone at EAPJ a long time ago about their installation, and they sent me a couple of extra pics which showed the modifications behind the dash. No idea if I'll be able to find them again though

I have the car booked in to a car stereo specialist this Friday. There is a resolution - a flip up screen - expensive though. Will wait and see what they say Friday. Thanks for all the advice.

I looked at that option, but it turned out to be a pretty **** one. If you're going to put a screen that size in, then you're better off remote mounting the screen from a double din unit.
A single din foldout will be too high and block the aircon controls, plus it will still look out of place.

One solution you will want to test is the Parrot Asteroid Smart. It's double din, but has no cd player, and as a result it's not very deep. When you have the headunit out you'll be able to test if it fits.
Chances are it will still be too deep, but you're in the best position to test it for the benefit of everyone else

Stay away from flip ups I've learned from experience constant motor/flip up motor failures render you constantly pulling it in & out to check on issues.
