Hi there
I have been away for 3 weeks to come back to my car being absolutely dead - no power whatsoever.
I cannot jump start it, as the battery is in the trunk. Which I cannot open. I cannot see anywhere to manually open trunk, even though I have a key. It won't open.
I have looked under trunk, to find a point which can be jumped...no luck.
I have also looked in the hood, and it seems that their is a fuse box etc on the passenger side of the vehicle. Do I apply jumpers to this point?
Also, once I have jumped it, and let it run for a few hrs, if it starts again, do I need a new battery, or after driving it for a few days will it be charged again?
Any help will be great!
Chris

Do not try to start the car from the connection to the fuse block. Connect to it and then you should be able open the trunk, gaining access to the battery. Even then, it is best to avoid jump starting, but if you have to, follow the procedure in the owners manual. The best solution is to charge the battery overnight, or just replace it if it's a few years old.
A battery that has been totally discharged is not likely to recover completely, and these cars require a strong battery.

Thanks, I got into the boot last night with a mechanic last night and we tried jumping it but it would try turn over but just didn't have enough juice to keep the motor going. I have a new battery coming this morning so will install and hopefully that will sort it. Thanks for the responses all

I wish you luck, but that attempt to jump start may have caused some serious problems.

Why would jump starting cause problems ? Pages 36 and 37 of the VEHICLE CARE book JJM 10 16 12/80 describes how to...select PARK, apply HANDBRAKE turn off all the vehicles electrical services, positive from jumper battery to positive on vehicle battery, negative on jumper battery to the boot / trunk catch in the centre of the rear panel or any earth point more than 12 inches from the battery, start the engine and allow to idle for 5 minutes before disconnecting the cables. Disconnect the negative lead from the earth point then the battery, then disconnect the positive from both batteries.Originally Posted by RJ237

If the procedure in the manual is followed and there is enough voltage to start the car, no problem. But not everyone follows the manual, or even has one. In this case the dead battery drew so much power that the engine would not start. This means the modules were exposed to a very low voltage during the process, and could become scrambled.
Not necessarily true, but a possibility.

I think you have something else wrong, besides a dead battery. I don't understand why it wouldn't start if there was enough voltage from the jumper to crank it over.
If I am off base, educate me.

Car is working and running like a dream. Replaced battery, and also pushed the car so it was facing downhill a bit. Just to make sure there was enough petrol up the right end of the car. (Was a bit low). After about three attempts to start after doing this, it burbled and then roared to life. Been driving it since yesterday and she is running like a dream....shhhew! Thanks for all the advice guys. Legends!
