keyless entry range

keyless entry range
The range on my keyless entry key fob is down to essentially zero. I need to be standing right next to the drivers door, with the fob almost touching the glass, and even then it takes 3-5 tries. I've replaced the batteries. That didn't help. Someone at the dealership told me the reduced range was a "safety feature". Has anyone else experienced this on a '01 xj? Any fixes? Thanks.

RE: keyless entry range
Do you have only one remote? Do they both do it like that?
If you only have one remote, I would get a second one. We can tell you how to programme it yourself. Even with good battery remote range can reduce with bad transmitter. Also, in the trunk, remove right cover from over battery and look down where. Fuse box is. You will see acoaxial cable going to the slcm at very bottom of fuse box. Make sure it is attached and not broken. You may have to remove the 3 10mm bolts holding down box to see it well.

RE: keyless entry range
so the coaxial cable being broken might very well cause decreased range on the keyless entry?
