Default Looking at a '00 XJ8

Hello to all,
I'm looking at a 200 XJ8 with 120K on it.
1. Is this mileage too high for this model year?
2. Any inherent issues like with the '98..I.E. upper timing chain tensioners, transmission issues, etc
Any thoughts would be well received.
$3200

Mine is about that mileage now. First 90K were trouble-free, then at about 12 years old, little things started to go, with increasing frequency and criticality within the last year. But age and exposure are bigger issues as its 17 years old and everything made of plastic, vinyl and rubber are starting to disintegrate. Overall, its no different from any 17 year old Ford or Toyota product, except that when something does break, you won't be fixing it the next day - perhaps next week after hunting down good used parts and waiting on delivery but you already know that. Overall, I'd say its the same as the 98, but with two less years of deterioration. If I were doing it today, I'd go 2003, just to get three more years out of it.

Thank you for your input. Two specific things I had heard and read on this site were that, by 2000, Jaguar had replaced the upper timing chain tensioners with ones that were not all plastic, and the they had addressed the "A" box gear in the transmissions. So do you know if that's the case?
There are a couple of '03's I've seen as well, probably the better choice as you suggested. The one advantage I will have is that my '98 will still be mine to pull the parts I have replaced and are still quite good. It's a GREAT car, but the engine is going.

Tensioner issue wasn't fixed until mid-late 2001

Wow, okay. Thought that issue was addressed earlier than 2001, but now that I read about it, maybe it was the "A" box gear in the tranny that was addressed around 1999-2000. Many thanks, not going with that 2000 model unless that can show me the tensioners have been upgraded. I did mine on my '98 and it was expensive. Not again!

Your probably thinking the Nikasil block issue.

Nope on all of those. I've had a case of bore wash due to the Nikasil cylinders. Also the A drum was still an issue. Just replaced mine in Feb. On another note. I have a 2000 XJ8 and it now has 158k on the clock. I just put 250 miles on it this last weekend. It ran like a champ. It really depends on how the car was maintained in it's early years.

"ALL AJ-V8’s produced between 1996 and 2001, regardless of size or application, (XK 4.0, XJ 4.0 and 3.2, S-type 4.0)
In August 2000 Jaguar replaced the Nikasil-linings with steel linings
The Nikasil cut-off date (18/08/00)"

Metal tensioners were installed on last six of this vin.
F41862.
Any number higher than this and your safe on tensioners.
The A drum preventative is to have the valve body main pressure spool valve updated.

I picked my 2000 up w/ advanced mileage albeit the tensioners, guides & transmission upgrades were already performed by a very alert previous owner. Almost 2 years in now & nothing major has arose just the expected maintenance for any car of this age.
