Default Looking to rebuild Transmission for 2001 XJ8

I have a 2001 XJ8 with approx. 107,000 Miles logged in. When it would not go into Reverse, I ended up having the trans taken apart to find the problem. After inquiring on the Jaguar Forum, and seeing where others had the same problem, the failed part turned out to be in the "A" Drum. To keep a long story short, lost confidence in shop that it was taken to, and I am currently looking for a shop in the Hampton Roads Virginia area(Chesapeake, Virginia Beach, Norfolk, Hampton) that specializes on rebuilding the ZF transmission. Any suggestions would be very helpful.

This may sound off the wall, but I'd simply ask Fantomworks for a reference. If you haven't seen it its a car show on Velocity and he's in Chesapeake I believe.

Thanks. Not familiar with Velocity. But I will look it up. I should admit that I am relatively new to using the Forum. I am sure I will get the info I need to help get "B" back on line.

Try asking on the regional and XK8 forums. Someone must know a reliable independent in your area.

Welcome to the forum Brown,

We normally discourage (a.k.a delete!) duplicate postings but in this instance it's sensible to ask for shop recommendations in the Region forum. Here's the link to your thread there for anyone following the topic:

Please follow this link New Member Area - Intro a MUST - Jaguar Forums - Jaguar Enthusiasts Forum to the New Member Area - Intro a MUST forum and post some info about yourself and your vehicle for all members to see. In return you'll get a proper welcome and some useful advice about posting to the forum.

Apologies . Thanks for not discouraging the duplicate posting. Did not realize the forums were connected. Appreciate your steering me in the right direction.

Local BMW, MB, and other ZF users have had luck with Prices Transmission - one block North on Witchduck off East 264 in Virginia Beach. When I had my 01, that was where I was going to take it if I had transmission issues. For heavy work (too heavy for me at 74), I took it to Abacus Racing on Baker's Road in Norfolk, just West of US 13. Best alignment and wheel balance is Checkered Flag (Burts and AAA never got it right).

Also, the AAMCO next door to Charles Barker Mercedes Benz and Maserati on Virginia Beach Blvd has quite a few MBs on their lot suggesting they can rebuild a ZF box.

Hello Jhartz,

Thank you for the good feedback. I will check into Prices. I believe I have passed it a few times while traveling on Witchduck.

Jhartz,

I contacted Prices. They were unable to help me in this particular situation. They preferred to have been in on the beginning of the removing the transmission. Appreciate the tips . I am currently working on another lead.

Default Progress Report on rebuilding Transmission for 2001 XJ8

Found a Local specialty shop that is stating they can rebuild trans and install around 2400-2500. This is for replacing all soft parts, new torque converter and Labor. This is suppose to be for a complete rebuild including updating the Valve body and any other item that needs updating. They offer a warranty of 12 mths /12000 miles. They were advised that the problem was in the A drum and trans has already been dismantled. I am wondering if the price they actually gave me was for just rebuilding the A drive. Does this amount sound low for a complete rebuild? Also, should I be looking for a longer warranty period. I welcome your thoughts on this .

ZF rebuilt mine 18k ago in my XK8 and it is giving symptoms of a failed valvebody. They also warranty for 12/12. I think you'll find it tough to find anyone willing to stand behind it as it seems to be engineered in defects in the tranny and parts used rather than the quality of the rebuild. I can't even find anyone local to me willing to look at and diagnose the car. They only want to buy remanned trannies and install (taking on zero liablity). Good luck!

I have not had to have a Jag tranny rebuilt (knock on wood), but had my Expedition rebuilt 2 times (about every 250k...got rid of it at 693k) and the cost was around 1200-1600 ea. time and a friend just had her Excursion done (I paid for) for 1700 with a 2 yr on it. But, that's down here in FLA. I even asked the guy about doing a flush on my Jag and he quoted me $110, to include draining the torque converter, I'm going to jump on that.
Just giving you some round numbers to look at.
Here's some results from a Bing search...

$2500 sounds about right.

Thanks Jhartz and Highhorse,

I have been checking around and it seems that I do have more takers on installing either a used or remanufactured trans. Looks like I will be going with this shop for the rebuild average cost of 2400-2500. Will let you all know how it turned out.
