howdy gang. Seems one of my camshafts is borderline with some scores on a journal. Its usable but I'd prefer not. Anyone have a drivers side (in the us) AJ26 supercharged intake cam they aren't using?

thanks.

Did the machine shop say that the cam couldn’t be polished up?

By chance, was the scored journal between cylinders #7 & #8?

they polished them, but gave me the "kind of iffy" description. Definitely towards the rear of the motor, I can't remember now how jag numbers its cylinders.

The reason I asked about the location is because the intake camshafts on #4 & #8 are the last engine components to receive pressurized oil from a cold startup hence the most likely to get scored. #4 is the P/S rear cylinder and #8 is the D/S rear (LHD car) cylinder. I’m not 100% sure but I’m pretty sure the AJ26 intake camshaft profile is the same as an AJ27 camshaft profile EXCEPT for the reluctors on the backside of the camshaft. The reluctors can be changed over from one cam to the other(26 reluctor to 27 camshaft) but, a lot of care must be taken during the removal and reinstalling of the reluctors themselves. If you do not put the correct reluctor on the camshaft, you will have a forever check engine light. Maybe someone else more knowledgeable than me will be able to give you a definitive answer on the AJ26 vs AJ27 camshaft. I think they are the same cam profile though.

26 and 26.5 cams are not the same as the 27 and they have their own buckets. all the later engines except the wallet rovers use the 27 buckets.

you probably can get away with it if you wanted to.

I would be seeking a new can as well. You might get away with using the old one, however
there would always be that question mark in your mind.

heads are back on, generally not too bad, lot of cleaning, but otherwise straight forward.

Whats not straight forward is the stupid heat shields on the drivers side manifold/cat pipe. Holy hell they suck.

Otherwise, just working my way through.

Good deal! There’s NOTHING like having a fresh valve job, stem seals, decked heads with mls gaskets and a valve adjustment. All that headache work goes away when you first get on it.

That's great! There is nothing like hearing an engine purr after accomplishing major work.
It makes the bruised knuckles better and takes away the aches from bending over too much.
