I have a 98 VDP with 132,000 miles. For the past month I have notice that my coolant has been mysteriously disappearing. Each morning I have to put in about half a pint, sometimes a pint if I drive a lot. I do not see any drips on the ground but do smell anti-freeze. I replaced the water distribution pipe last summer. The water pump has no unusual sounds and spins evenly. However, I do see gunk around the water pump side of the lower front of the engine.

Does anyone have any ideals or suggestions.

It seems you are losing coolant when you are driving not parked so its probably the water pump. Is your oil nice and oily or foamy

 

engine oil is good. no signs of water. i pulled the plugs and they are dry, too, so no cracked block.

i took the car into the shop and they did a pressure test. they said that there was no major leak. (i could have told them that) i assumed they inspected the water pump, but who knows. i many replace the thermostat, maybe it is sticking a little.
