Default More transmission issues

First I'd like to start by saying Thanks for checking out my post. This is my last ditch effort to finding a budget fix before trying to unload my 2000 Jaguar XJ8 L.

Let's get into this!! XD

In early winter (2019) I was pulling out of a Walmart parking lot. Within 20 feet of leaving the parking spot I felt the car basically let go of the drive gear it was in and it would just freely rev, at about 2k rpm it would bang and slowly work it's way up to speed. I had someone in the car to drop off at work and a toddler in the car I needed to get home. I carefully (minimized the revving) got everyone to work and home safely with the toddler. From there I parked the car and hit the forums. That is where I first found this forum and read about the A-Drum issue with the ZF5HP24 transmissions. I have a mechanic neighbor who was kind enough to look it over and pulled the transmission pan and filter. Metal chunks and silver particles were found in the pan and fluid. Between that and reading I determined based on lack of cash flow and the evidence at hand I would try to replace the A-Drum and update the transmission pressure regulator valve.

Over the next few months with only being able to work on the car during the mechanics free time, and while taking up space in his garage. We recently finished the reassembly using and entire clutch assembly sourced off Ebay and a new Transgo TPR valve. The transmission fluid was recommended by the mechanics friend at a parts shop. The neighbor added the transmission fluid (about 7.5 quarts) while running the car long enough to work through the gears in the j-gate and back to park. Reverse felt real good when being put into gear, but drive still felt a bit weak. After getting the fluid to where we expect is correct and leaving the car on jack stands, reverse worked great while drive would work for a few seconds then seem to bind up. Upon placing the transmission into neutral the wheels would roll forward for a small distance then stop. Repeated checking of codes would show p1722 - Stall Speed error. The mechanic suggested maybe resetting the computer by disconnecting the battery might help as well as getting the car on all 4 wheels and seeing how it drives. Battery was disconnected for a week. Now while trying to drive forward there is no bang, but it takes maybe half throttle to start rolling forward. While moving there is a loud noise similar to brakes dragging. The noise stops when the car stops moving (still in drive) and makes no noise at all in reverse while moving.

Phew that's a long read!! (felt a lot longer typing it)

Today - I realize there is a hard reset to attempt by disconnecting the battery and connecting the positive and negative cables together for a certain amount of time.
Also I should check the fluid one more time to see where that has stabilized.

I am guessing I have faulty parts or there is some back-flow or buildup of pressure that shouldn't be happening. I am in now way familiar with automatic transmissions and the mechanic is at a loss. I realize this is a lot to take in, but hope someone has some insight that may help.

It is a US car while I am in Canada with my fiance. Getting parts, or an entire transmission, has proven difficult and out of our budget. If necessary I will try to get someone close, but from the states that is interested in purchasing the car and trailer it home. The car was never imported into Canada, so I am unable to do anything legally with it here except have it crushed and destroyed. Seems a shame as it is in fairly decent condition minus the transmission issue.

Thanks for sticking with me through this story, and look forward to any help or suggestions this forum may have.

Before throwing in the towel I would do an advance search for checking fluid level or download the tech manual. I think you are still low on fluid. The level isn't done by an arbitrary 7.5 quarts. That is engine oil. You need to have the fill plug out , the transmission in gear and up to temperature and then fill until the fluid flows slightly from the fill port.

The 7.5 quarts was a rough estimate on how much fluid was used to fill to the point we are now. I agree it should be checked again and have this link to follow which I beleive outlines the proper process you are referring to check the fluid level?

Not sure what link you are using but take a look at the one below starting at post #7

That seems much easier than the link I referred to. Thanks!! I will try that this weekend and get an update posted.

I found that out yesterday and was absolutely amazed someone crafted the transmission oil dipstick for the 5hp24 transmissions. It will definitely be something I'll look into in the future once I get this sorted out. Thanks!!!
