Default My 98 xjr won't start! Please help.

Hey guys. I have a 1998 XJR and I love it! It has been running awesome until last night. I took it for a ride. Parked it and when I came back out an hour later the car started and ran very rough for 20 seconds and then died. I couldn't get it to stay running after that. To me it sounded as though it was flooded. Does this ever happen to these cars? It would only fire if I pumped the gas pedal while cranking it over. Now it just turns over. No firing at all. It acts like it's not getting fuel. I let it sit overnight hoping it would start this morning, but it won't start. Any thoughts? It just seems crazy the car was running great and then won't even start now. Please help. This is my only car and I need it running. Thanks in advance.

Could be your fuel pump(s) died. A number of years ago, we drove and parked our 2001 XJ8 at the shopping center.

In about 1 hour or more we tried to start the engine and it sounds like it was not getting any gas.

We had it to towed to the Jaguar Dealership. They found that the fuel lead link was burned and also the fuel pump had died and needed to be replaced.

Forum member danielsand mentioned in another thread mentions that having a low amount of fuel in the fuel tank causes the fuel pumps to get damaged (and die).

The fuel pumps are cooled by having enough fuel in the tank to cover them at all times (it lubricates them).

Therefore it is a good idea to never let your fuel in the tank get to low.

There are pin-point test that can be performed with a multimeter to see if it might be the fuel pumps or relay or circuit wiring or wing connectors.

There are step by step diagnostics and they are listed in the JTIS software.

I am not saying this is the issue with your XJR, but could be the problem.

If you have determined that you have fuel pressure and it will not start, it is likely that you have cylinder wash by now, a common problem with nikasil lined engines. Do a search fore bore wash or cylinder wash.
You can try to start by flooring the gas pedal, which disables injectors, then back off pedal after cranking for 10- 20 sec. If that does not work it's necessary to remove the plugs from at least one bank and add 1/2 tsp oil to the cylinders. If this works, expect a lot of white smoke.

Well I had to have the car towed yesterday. I had it taken to a shop but they don't specialize in Jaguars but they do work on them. Hopefully they will do some research before tearing the whole car apart. The closest Jaguar dealership is a couple hundred miles away from where we live.

Call the shop and ask if they are familiar with the bore wash phenomenon, it's not that common outside of early Jags, although any engine can suffer it.
