Cool Is My Cap Supposed to Click?

Hi Jag Lovers. I'm wondering if someone can answer a daft question. I've been getting used to my 2001 XJ8 3.2Ltr saloon over the last 3 months . . well as much as the shocking UK weather will let me . . . and I've ended up puzzling over a situation. Yesterday (Thursday 4th April) my engine management light came on but there was no other issues and my car was behaving impeccability. I did some forum research and read the TSB about filler cap issues and checked mine out today.

The petrol cap seats perfectly normally and turns the usual 180 degrees to its lock position but I cannot (no matter how much force I use) get any "clicks" from the cap. Now I'm pretty sure that I can remember that it used to click . . am I right? Unfortunately its one of those completely routine things you don't pay attention to until it goes wrong. I hooked up a OBD2 and discovered Fault Code P0460 existing and one P0460 pending. From the basic kit list, this code is Fuel Level Sensor A Circuit Malfunction. Now I already know that I have a faulty fuel level sender and its not giving any reading and its a job that I'll get to do eventually. (I just run her to 200 miles then top-up to full).

Has anyone experienced this issue with the suspect fuel caps and should the cap click if it working correctly?

Any help would be much appreciated. Cheers

Pretty sure the stock cap does not click. There are some aftermarket locking
caps that do.

Hi All . . and thanks for comments. I will upload a pic ASAP but not so easy as I don't use Smart devices (old camera and memory card transfer to PC). The cap on my cat is an original Jaguar petrol filler cap . . . but it does not have the part number of the replacement cap as per the TSB. I'll dust off the camera and get a pic so you can see. JFYI . . . I cleared the Error Codes yesterday and so far today, the Engine Management Light has not re-appeared and my cat is driving as beautifully as she looks!!
Cheers

Cool

Hi All. I've taken some pics of the cap that is on the car at the moment and tried to show the only number on it in last pic. It's probably unreadable as I only have a steam powered camera! The number on the cap is . . 20030 1E . . with no other marks I can see. Is this the original filler cap that should be on the car? Might it be a replacement put on somewhere in its life? Should it click? BTW . . Engine Management Light has remained OFF so far during today's driving, so I'm not too concerned at the moment that there is anything too amiss . . just curious I suppose.

Cheers

Straight on look

Side on

Filler pipe neck

Side on - upside down

In full profile

The mysterious numbers!

I'm going to leave it and just continue for now and see if problem re-occurs. But I am puzzled as I'm pretty sure it did "click" previously when fastening down?

The cap on mu US 01 XJR looks like that, it does not click and never has. I have never had any MIL codes related to the evap system, gas cap or anything like that. I suspect your issue lies elsewhere.

The caps on my cars do not click but I can see by your photo that the gasket on your cap has some cracks in it. That might let some air seep in and cause the check engine light to come on.

Caps are available on-line (bought my last from Barretts); doesn't click but fixed the Engine Light. Then I cleaned the old cap with silicon spray, it also then sealed correctly.

Hi Guys . . And thanks a million. Its amazing what another pair of eyes can see . . . and yes . . it is pretty clear (when I zoomed in on the pics) that there are cracks on the surface of the cap where it sits on the filler neck! I'll get another (TSB correct) cap ordered and also get the filler neck top surface cleaned up.

Thanks chaps . . Stoke Jag Dude

My cap looks like yours (but no cracks in the seal) & does not click when tightened.

Hi there. The side nipple you are seeing its the remains of the plastic tie lead or tether to the outside fuel locking flap. Its clearly died a swift death at a previous owners hands . . . not surprised by the odd bout of "fuel rage" . . . considering what they make us pay in the UK!! Cheers
