What later system do you speak of? I believe models 2004 and newer are self contained in the head unit (and are totally different) vs the trunk mounted disc of the 2000. I would seriously think about putting in a new head unit with an included nav. There are lots of posts regarding an install of such on site. One in particular is called 'ask me them stereo questions'. I even provided a pdf link to the wiring of the stereo since there is no quick interface connector made for a Jag.

The old systems (pre-2010 or so) are unsupported for updates and junk compared to a $75 Garmin.

You can always do what I did. Put a Parrot bluetooth in my car and using my phone get turn by turn navigation through my speakers. I don't get a screen unless I look at my phone, but I do have a clean factory look.

My vote is for an after market self contained unit and with more than one reason to support it. For one thing there is the location, with the after market unit at the windshield corner and not having to look down and away from upcoming traffic. You don't need a dvd either, plus you get the latest TFT display technology and a wide array of choices in size and features. The final clincher is the unbeatable price choices.

This is actually one of the first things that I changed on my 2002 XJR, as I considered that tiny 2-color LCD display like an insult to good Jaguar brand taste and a laughing excuse for a Merc or BMW, even a Lexus owner with their 7" multi-color displays. In fact, I went ahead and discarded every single component and cables and installed everything in a much higher quality fashion. Jaguar finally installed something decent in there with the new X350 cars.

Cheers,

I removed the useless cupholders and installed a Garmin GPS that folds into the armrest when not in use.

Personally, I don't, my XJR has never had cup holders fitted, but I thought it was mandatory in the US.

Those early Jag drink holders are pitiful at best. They're too shallow, just hit the brakes a little hard with a full cup in there that's taller than 4" and next you'll be on your knees drying the floor carpet at the end of the floor well. It seems like they must've been designed by people who had never seen such a thing as a cup holder before.

Even though I'm full aware of the risk and keep my hand on the cup at all times, especially with a Venti... it never fails that I forget about it, or so does my wife... and there it goes airborne... or I catch it just as it takes off... LOL

Cheers,

That's a smart idea/design, Vector, and you're correct in that the holders are truly useless because they're just too shallow. Only thing is that, if you need to look at it while driving, the display seems to be a little far from the field of view (windshield), but the good thing is that glancing at the GPS screen is not like "watching" something because it only takes a split second to see what you need, especially with the help of the voice directions. It looks perfect in there.

Cheers,

Yes, the voice commands are the schnit! The only time I look at the screen is when I am safely stopped to program it.
