Default 2000 Jaguar Vanden Plas

Hello, everyone. I do not own a Jaguar, yet. I did found one that looked nice from inside out, but was told "it cranks but does not start, perhaps internal engine damage". Its a 2000 Jaguar Vanden Plas V8. The person wanted 800 bucks for this Jaguar. I know it is a huge gamble to get this car and try to fix it myself, but......I dont know...should I just go for it??
Other wise, I will still be look around for another good-better deal. Anyway, I am glad I found this site, because reading many of the trends has helped out.

Welcome.

Itis a gamble for sure.

Those engines had issues with timing chain tensioners, but failure of them usually either siezed the engine solid, or it made obscene rattles when cranked over.

Failure to start, as you say, could be as simple as a fuel pump, crank angle sensor, etc.

The people in the X308 section should give you sound advice.

Welcome to the forum lelledge,

Good to have you with us at Jaguar forums.

As others have said - it's a gamble. If you either can or are willing to learn how to troubleshoot and fix Jaguars, it's a very tempting project. If you would have to pay someone to fix it for you then it could turn out to be very expensive.

Follow this link https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/x-type-x400-14/ to the X308 forum for help, advice and information.
The 'HOW TO' thread at the top is a good place to start for info on regular issues.

You can also visit the US Western Region forum by following this link US Western - Jaguar Forums - Jaguar Enthusiasts Forum
to find other members in your region.

Enjoy the forums.

Grant Francis, thanks for the heads up. If this model does have a rep of seizing because of timing chain tensioners, than that will be extremely dangerous 'gamble', especially when I will be driving on the interstate. I have not purchased that Jag yet. I did made an appointment to see it this coming Saturday. If it cranks but not start, which I hope it is a simple thing as fuel pump(fingers crossed), and not any rattle or some other weird sound. However, I did find this car in Craigslist. Take a look at it: Google this VIN: SAJDA24C7YLF20533. Then click on "2000 Jaguar Vanden Plas - Craigslist. Let me know what you think, please. I do take all comments and suggestion into consideration, even if its the harsh truth.
