Default Need help decoding vin on potential Supercharged XJ8 Vanden Plas

I went to look at a 1990 XJ8 Vanden Plas and to my surprise when I got in it said "Supercharged" on the tach. Under the hood it didn't look like an NA AJ-V8 but it also didn't look like the shiny chrome supercharger on the XJR. The vin for the vehicle is SAJKD6843XC868219. Every decoder I've put it through says it's NA but when I tried to manually decode it using a chart I found of the forum, nothing seems to fit right. Could someone knowledgeable about the vin designation of these cars could please help me determine how the car actually left the factory?

This may be a better decoder?

Your VIN leads to this ad at Evan's Nissan for a 1999 Anthracite/Cashmere Vanden Plas, with "supercharged' very visible on the tachometer, but no under-hood picture.

Simply take a picture of under the hood and post it here on the forum.

Sounds like the INSTPK has been replaced. The mileage will likely NOT be correct if it has.

Jaguar did offer a SC VDP but I forget when it was introduced in the US.

The interior pictures certainly support that, the car is listed as 87,000 miles, if that is true it has had some really harsh ownership!

I do have a car fax for it that has a continuous report of the mileage.

I saw that listing too, you could order the SC drivetrain on a VDP before it became an offical model. In 01-03 they actually had VDP Supercharged badges on the deck lid. This is the US version of the Daimler Super V8 basically. I also noticed the low coolant dash message and torn up interior, so going to need a lot of TLC. BTW you can get a complete black VDP interior, seats and all on Ebay now for $925. The SC itself wasn't chromed usually, it had a flat silver finish and the intercoolers in kind of a silvery tan. Judging by the tach and the big exhaust pipes this is almost certainly a VDP with the SC drivetrain special ordered.

I need to go back and take some pictures, although it didn't have any warning lights on and sounded pretty good btw. It really is the only VDP in my area with that mileage. Would it be more cost effective to just take it to an upholstery shop and have it cleaned up?

My 2000 VDP is SC'd and was a special order and has no badging stating such. I was trying to order parts one time and got into a ..."ahem"... discussion with the parts guy that it was an "R" model. It came to the point I said I'll take "bleepin" pics and send them to you if I have to. He finally conceded after taking part of my VIN. This was back in '06 or that time frame, before SC was listed in the parts books.

I have a 99 in that color\trim combo, it’s badged and looks like a normal VDP. That car has the solar wheels so I think it's the real deal. Mine has pentas but I don't know if it left the factory with them.

If you work on these yourself it could be a great buy. This was the top of the XJ range, even above the XJR. They only made a few thousand VDP SC as opposed to 15K XJRs. The ebay ad I saw had seats, center console, rear deck and door cards. Most upholstery shops would likely charge way over $1000 to do the entire interior. Plus it likely wouldn't be Connolly leather or look quite right. Those seats looked torn and worn, a cleanup likely wouldn't help but get an estimate to be sure.

If you just want to reupholster the front seats that might work, but you might be able to find just two used VDP seats for sale.

Here ya go. Something kinda seems off with the hose running across the inner cooler.

that’s the thermostat bleed line, it’s normally plastic and commonly broken when working in the area. it looks dumb but it should work

the homemade cold air intake doesn’t look half bad

That is a lot of car for next to nothing. One day we’ll all be saying “remember that time we saw a supercharged Vanden Plas for only 6k.” Lol

I had the Sovereign equivalent and it depreciated by more in one year than your cost of buying this one.
