Default Needing Your Experienced and Expert Guidence..Please Help!

Hello to all,

I am needing some guidence. I have a 1998 Jag XJR 4.0 and it sounds/seems like my chain tensioner(s) may be going out. I have researched throughout this board, I have a question that requires your experienced guidence. I will be doing just the chain tensioners. With that said,..Will I need all the tools like the ones to hold the camshafts in place and the chain tensioning tool, etc.? OR Will I be ok with just the chain tensioning tool? Please forgive my ignorance if what I just asked made any sense at all. But please help as I know many of you may know what I am trying to refer to and I am sure you can help. Thanks much in advance and any respond is greatly appreciated.

Got to ask why you think they're playing up? if it's making a noise or a rough idle I wouldn't start the car until done. The damage is done on start up, if the chain slips one tooth it's rough idle, if it slips 2 teeth it's usually game over for the engine, valves meeting pistons

Dev use the search function and look for the "zip-tie method" this gives guidance on using the most basic kit. With this job spending the time reading up is important.

At the least you'll need to know how to bring the cam flats up to service position, new upper tensioners need the shorter bolts and possibly new timing cover gaskets.

Do a search here on the "zip-tie method" to replace the secondary tensioners. Excellent write-ups are posted. Be careful to re-torque the cam bearing caps evenly

Buy parts for a 2001 Lincoln LS, some good deals online. But I think you may have a J26 engine and need to get a Jag valve cover set.
