I wanted to add a 2-DIN screen in my Jaguar X308 for Android auto or Apple Carplay, normal bluetooth streaming and to use as a screen for a reversing camera. All the attempts that I have seen online were either done with head units that are in my opinion too flashy to fit into the restrained interior of the X308, too old for the desired functionality or needed some sort of destruction of the centre console or radio mount. So I tried to find a way without these drawbacks.
The shape of the Jaguar radio holder is unusual when compared to those in other cars, it is quite large, but not high enough to accommodate an aftermarket 2-DIN system straight out of the box. The curved shape doesn’t help either. The Sony XAV-line caught my interest because it is modern, its design is restrained and wouldn’t be a total mismatch in the interior of the X308, but equally important, it is one of a few head-units on the market with a 2-DIN screen part and a 1-DIN electronics part at the back. There is only one small problem: this electronics part is inconveniently placed at the top of the screen and won’t fit into the X308’s radio cavity. I wouldn’t have written this if I wouldn’t tell you now that this is an elegant solution to this problem! It is entirely reversible, virtually non-destructive and (hopefully) suitable for almost all Sony XAV units!
I have added an installation guide with pictures and an electrical connections guide to make an adapter cable fom the Sony head unit to the wiring of the car.
Disclaimer:
I have only tried this method with a Sony XAV AX100. I am 99% certain that the other units AX1xxx, AX3xxx and AX5xxx are suitable as well. The structural parts of the design of these units look identical and that would also be a logical manufacturing choice from Sony’s side. As I haven’t physically disassembled every XAV version, it could be that you run into something that isn’t mentioned in the instructions, but I don’t expect that to be the case. Let the rest of us know in the comments if you come across any differences!
I’m not sure if the AX4xxx and AX6xxx models would fit, since these came out later than the others, but if I have to guess: they will probably be compatible.
The Sony XAV units that definitely won’t work with this method are the ones with a ‘floating screen’, i.e. the AX8xxx line. Those screens are too big to fit into the available space.
The electrical connections are made for a Jaguar X308 XJR from 1999 with a premium Harman Kardon sound system. The configuration in your car might differ.
Great work Olenof and a generous sharing of all the resources via files you have linked.
I agree that the XJ8 deserves a modest pathway into Apple carplay and Android auto.
Also, your solution to double DIN into restricted available space is excellent.
Above all, your images show that you have achieved a VERY professional fitment.
Congratulations, and again, many thanks for sharing.
Cheers,
Ken
