Default New to here, to jags and please help!

Hi all. I apologize my first post here is to ask for help.
I have never joined any forums before and it took me a while to figure out how to even post on here. On top of that, I have also never owned a jag before until now.

First off, my name is Dev, living in sunny California in the United States. I have a 1998 xjr. Because I have just figured out how to post and ask questions on here, I have been driving the car under this condition for the last few months.

The car drives very well and seem to have no problems; (but what do I know really because it is my first jag). It just feels fine and drives very smoothly. However, a few months back, I did a compression check and I got from all cylinders right around 65 to 70 psi.

It was consistent with all cylinder, but that just seems kind of weird to me. I have no idea why its so low. While I tried searching for the correct compression psi, I find nothing over the internet.

Please, as I read many of the posts of you members here, I can clearly see that you all have alot of experience with this car.

Please help me determine whether that is the correct compression or not and give me some pointers. Thanks much in advance for your help.

Welcome to the Jag Forums. Did you pull the fuel pump relays before doing the compression test? If not you were putting fuel into those nikasil cylinders and were lucky you had enough compression to start the car again. Do a search for cylinder wash and you will find lots of info.

Hi Dev -Welcome to the forum.
Look at post# 29 in the following forum thread (Yet another cylinder wash):

https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/x...er-wash-49001/

Also look at the posts in this other forum thread on compression:

What they're telling you, in a nutshell, is that your test was not valid due to fuel washing the oil off of the Nikasil cylinder coating, thereby significantly reducing compression.

So, the good news is that you probably have great compression and, with this good Nikasil coating, you should have good compression for the rest of the car's life.

Welcome to the forum Dev,

Two good decisions - get a Jaguar and get here.

Good advice on the compressions in the previous posts. What prompted you to test the compressions in the first place?

And also make sure you have WOT (wide open throttle) when doing the test.

+1 to pulling the fuel pump relay and put some oil down the cylinders. I had a wash and it showed anywhere from 30 to 90 psi- squirted oil in the cylinder INSTANT 150+

It does beg the question- what problem were you having that caused you to do a compression check?

If you are in Orange county, we do have a Jaguar club that meets one a month in desperate need of another X300/X308 member I am currently the only one sadly.

Thanks so much guys for the quick response and information. When I did the check, I did take out the fuel pump fuse. And the reason for the check, I guess, was just from being paranoid from all the internet readings about the nikasil. I have no clue about the nikasil until after I bought the car. I am learning as I go, which I should have done before buying a car. But as GGG said, I guess I made a good decision with a jag. And from what QuadManiac posted, it is a relief to hear.

As for location, I live in Clovis and Fresno area. Wish I was closer to Orange county to join you guys, dsynder586.

Thanks jimlombardi for those links. I will look into it. And again, thanks to all you guys for the help.
