New XJR owner questions
Hello all. After lots of window shopping, today I bought myself a nice old (2000) XJR. Following the 180mile journey home I've started to formulate a number of questions which I'm hoping some of you more experienced owners will be able to answer.
1 - The windows go down with a one-shot press of the button, but you have to keep your finger on the button to go up. Is this normal?
2 - The auto-dimming rearview mirror is half brown and I understand this indicates the electrochromatic liquid has leaked out. Is the mirror unique to the XJR, or can I widen the search for a new one to other JLR marques?
3 - I've got ABS and TRAC warnings on the dash and a quick glance under the bonnet shows that somebody has wedged in a second ABS pump/valve block with the harness attached to it (and the pipes attached to the original unit). I'm guessing somebody has made a half-hearted attempt to remedy an ABS issue and given up, so what I'll do is get a new unit. However I can't read the part number on either one so is there only one to choose from? (I think the number ends with 0220.4 but it is very feint).
4 - Usual roof lining issue, but I've found a replacement for that.
5 - Head unit has buttons for NAV and Phone, but neither do anything. Is that normal, or did this car originally have these?
6 - FM Radio reception is poor - again, is this normal?
These are the ones that have come to light in the short term. I'm sure I'll find more as I go through the car.
Thanks in advance,
Tom

1. My windows work the same as yours.
2. I think there are 2 different versions of the mirror, the difference I believe is the connector plug for the wiring.
3. Have not got a clue.
4. You have got covered.
5. If your centre storage bin under the arm rest is about 4 inches deep, you do not have the phone fitted. If a lot shallower maybe.
In the boot on the nearside if you only have the CD changer, then you do not have NAV. If on the other hand you have what looks like 2 CD players then you do, as the SAT NAV is CD based.
6. My FM reception is perfect, try cleaning the antenna mast.
7. Welcome to the forum
Welcome Tombloke.A new abs will cost more than you paid for the car. In the boot somewhere around the spare you will find ( I hope) the VCATS sticker, which has a list of the modules in your car. If you can locate an exact match used module it may solve the problem, but not necessarily without the use of dealer software. There are services which offer to rebuild the existing module ( which one?) for a reasonable price. They advertise on ebay here, probably on your side also.

Welcome to the forum Tom. How many miles on it?
Have you read up on the secondary timing chain tensioner issue I recommend all new owners check, it can lead to engine damage if they've not been changed to metal (instead of original plastic bodies)

Hi Sean - 109k, and yes I've spent many hours reading up on the timing chain issue. I've got it on my list.
Top priority is the ABS module, then I'll move on to the engine.
I re-plugged the plumbed-in ABS module today and got a whole host more messages on the dash about "wrong part fitted". Both ECUs are the same LNF2210AC parts so I'm guessing if you insert a new one you need to welcome it to the car somehow. Also gained P1637 and P1720 error codes.
I'll spend a bit more time at the weekend and hope the fix is the usual cracked solder joint on the PCB. (I'm an electronic engineer so if that's the fault, it should be easy for me).
When I did the DTC run today, I've also got P1646 and P1647 - which I believe are the upstream HO2 sensors (they were also reading 0V on a live data output). If these are kaput, would that explain a slightly strangled performance from the engine?
