Hi there, I just purchased a beautiful 1999 XJ8 VDP a week ago from an individual - 134,500 miles - ran like a dream until Sunday evening (9th day of ownership!). Got a fail safe message and then she died, but continued to cycle through some other alarming messages - abs traction control fault, transmission fault, etc. I let her sit for a minute or two and started her up and voila, quiet and smooth again - got home fine. Even went out again to get dinner - no problems. I started her in the morning to go to work and again, all the messages start scrolling and she is running incredibly rough - I let her cycle through for about 45 - 60 seconds, turned off and let sit a minute or two, turned over, quiet as a mouse. I took her into the Jag specialist here fearing the worst after doing some research in the forums the night before. And it is confirmed - tensioners cracked and falling apart but no chain damage, thank goodness. While in the shop, am also going to get the exhaust and cooling hoses fixed as well as the lead relays and possibly the water pump if he finds that is bad - $3,500 later, I hope to have a solid car - he tells me I will. At least the other big problem with this model, the thermostat was replaced with metal prior to my purchase. She's totally worth it - I have never driven any other vehicle that offers the ride this beauty does. I'm just hoping that this will be the brunt of the issues as I plan to keep up all of her other maintenance as scheduled. Any thoughts - am I missing any crucial information - being new to the world of Jaguar?

The multiple codes are often an indication of a weak battery. Have it load tested, or if it's a few years old just replace it. Make sure it vents to the outside via the rubber hose.
