99 XJ8..wife got the car home with "restricted performance" on. Pulled a P1229, "Electronic throttle control circuit". The car isn't used much, so I figured maybe some fuel gumming up in the throttle body. Cleaned the throttle body with TB cleaner, pulled off all connections to the TB, cleaned them with contact cleaner from Radio Shack. Cleared code with code reader. Ran the car about 6 miles...absolutely nothing out of shape....my question is...did the cleaning fix it, or if it is in fact a bad throttle body will it come back??? I guess what I'm asking is if a TB is actually bad will the P1229 code come and go?

Banshee,
Did the P1229 code come back? I had the same code today. I have not done anything yet other than adjust the throttle linkage. Just wondering if that "fixed" it.
Thanks

I did a thorough cleaning of the TB with throttle body cleaner, and took every connector off the throttle body and cleaned both ends with "contact cleaner" from Radio Shack. This seems to have done the job. I cleared the code after doing this and it has not come back at all. $10 instead of $1500!!

P1229 implies a bad connection to the throttle position motor, so a cleaning of the contacts in the mating connectors at the TB would, indeed, be a good idea, as Banshee has suggested.
