Default P1722 - Just how screwed am I?

So... I was driving along minding my own business when the car (2000 XJ8 VDP) quit accelerating like it went out of gear, then a clunk, the car defaulted to 4th gear and I got the P1722 - Slip Speed error code and Transmission Fault message on the dashboard.

I had never noticed any issues shifting or anything that felt "transmissioney" before. In general the car has been running quite well for the last several months.

Now, every time I start the car, it will go into reverse just fine, I think I could drive in reverse all day, but in forward, the engine reves up then clunk, default to 4th, error.

I took it to a local shop, they read the code and said the transmission was shot. Completley burnt up inside, I find that hard to believe, that it's a total waste and not rebuildable, so I looked around on line, and I see people seem to have transmission issues around 80K miles (I've got 86K). I also see the range of fixes is anywhere from $1500 to $6000 with 2500 being a common number.

How can I tell if I'm going to be on the high end or the low end? Is there anything I can check? How can I find a good mechanic that's willing to investigate instead of just say replace?

Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

There really shouldn't be open to low/high "end." Your "A" drum went so it's an r&r w/rebuilt unit, one price should suffice. 3K or abouts

btw - same just happen to our XJ yesterday, gonna drop it and swap it me-self save big $$$

sorry to tell you but the transmission is shot.if you check the forums few days ago I had the exact same thing happening to me at 64K on mj XJ8. I didnt want to believe that it is the transmission so I took it to few places and ended up changing the input output speed sensors and the fluid. for nothing !!!! It cost me $ 400 dollars to find out that I have to replace the transmission. Thats $400 that could have went towards the replacment anyway leason learned I guess. My car is in the shop as we speak it is going to be done on Monday or Tue morning iIwill be more then glad to let you know how it worked out. I just hope I can help that someone does not make the same mistake I did thats why we are here for.

Refill the transmission with synthetic fluid, preferably by yourself. You have very little to lose.

why would you do that? The diagnostic says the input/ output ratio is wrong. Why on earth would you think thaty means it needs new fluid?

Hey, at least I did not recommend that a wax job would fix it!

What? You didn't give the dealer $6000. for an new gearbox? You have destroyed the value of your car! It may never run right again! What were you thinking?

That seems to be the ball park I've come up with, I took it to AMCCO and they gave me an estimate of $2500, I took it to another shop around here and got another estimate of $2800. I haven't decided to do it yet though, I love the car but I'm tired of all the issues. It's a gorgeous car, I constantly get compliments and turn heads, I love the power when it's running right but every other week it's restricted performance this and restricted performance that. I've never owned such a diva bitch car.

Hi h20boy ,
What they have done is they swaped the old with a new 5HP24 rebuilded transmission. The transmission was TDYNO tested. The total with instalation came out to be $2700 with 12 month unlimited waranty. Oh also of course new fluid ( included in the price) wich i still dont get why it would cost $60 a q.

To be fair I've put almost 40K on this car in a year and a half, I've used it as a daily driver for an 80 mile round trip commute. I love the ride and all the comfort features, I never turn the lighs on or off, when it rains the wipers come on, the sound system is great to me, the heated seats in the winter are fantastic, and it's a real attention getter.

I'm split on what to do, I have three options. I can haul it in to the garage and pay the 2600 ish to have it fixed, I can take it down to my brother in law (has a small garage) and over the course of the next few months we can attmept the rebuild ourselves, or I can just try and unload it with a bad transmission and go buy something else.

Opinions?

Actually, I'm going back to jag from owning a Porsche 911/993 cabrio for a few years. This is due to an accident and the bad streets here taking their toll on the car. I'm keeping the car and fixing it up.

Owning a 911 is like owning a tank. Nothing stops it. Parts can be falling off the car all day long, but it keeps on going. I can only hope the XJR I'm looking at holds up half as well.

Keep the Jag, do it yourself. Much more rewarding, especially if you have another car you can pootle around in whilst you are working on the Jag.

They are great cars, built brilliantly and just an all round brilliant car. Just have those annoying gremlins which you only really get with British cars.

Mind you, at least you don't have a French/Italian car, christ, they take unreliability and expensive servicing to a whole new level!

My Dad just got a BMW 635d and gave me his Jag, he is missing it already, he said the Beemer just does not have the refinement of the Jag, despite being ever so slightly quicker (and it is a diesel, eurgh!) the ride is just too hard, but the new Jags are not really comfortable anymore, so German it was...

I just recently received the same error code from my '98 XJ8, and it does the same thing as XJ8Johnny's.
Any suggestions on the next move I should make? My options are to get the transmission fluid flushed
and refilled then see how things work, or to just get it replaced. I am not sure what to do yet, thanks for your help.
The car is @ 145k miles, 65k on the rebuilt engine.

At 145k miles that transmission served you well. Bet it is still sealed for life.

Love the car, new engine, replace the transmission.
