Default Purchasing advice on XJ8 2003 please.

This 2003 XJ8 vehicle belongs to good friends of ours. One owner and around 100,000 miles. ( they have already had the 100,000 mile service done and recently put in a new battery ). The transmission was replaced soon after they bought it. The wife has been the only driver and she is in her seventies. Garaged and maintained and very clean looking. Took ii for a short drive two days ago ( felt wonderful ) and borrowing it for a few days from this weekend. Have a vehicle check with a Jag dealership booked for early next week. I did notice disintergrating shock bushings ( orange in color ) when I opened the hood.

I am semi retired and cant afford major repairs in the future. Any advice would be most appreciated. Thanks

The upper shock mounts are very easy to replace, and pretty cheap to do so. Can do both sides in a half hour with drinking time in the middle. Plenty of DIY's to be found.

Being the last year of production for the X308 XJ8 the 2003 model year is the best one to buy, all the bugs that were going to be fixed, were fixed, by this year.

As per CharlzO, the front shock bushings are cheap (around $40 a pair) and easy to replace.

The vehicle check at the Jag dealership should alert you to any other problems, but if the vehicle has been cared for there souldn't be anything major to worry about.

If it's a reasonable price, it sounds like a good buy.

Let us know what transpires.

There is almost nothing out there worth driving as much as a well maintained 03 XJ8 for $5000. Replacing the shock mounts is a piece of cake. Maybe thirty minutes a side with most of the time jacking the car up to take pressure off the mounts. Lots of threads on this forum on how to do it. But buy the replacements; don't try the repair version, just not worth it. And don't buy them from the dealer.

The maintenance going forward is hardly different that any other car. The difference: handling, acceleration, comfort, ride, and the beauty of it . . .

And there is this forum: lots of help.

Where is the car located? Some that have been in the snow belt have issues not found in those in California.

Thanks so much for your advice. Will have to find all this info on the forum. Gives me hope. The car is in Georgia.

Sounds like a reasonable price from what you have described.
