Default Purpose of dash storage under wheel?

I feel like an idiot for not noticing, in the nearly 2 years I owned my XJ8, that there is a little storage area below the wheel right below the open trunk button .

After having a look at it, I can't seem to think of what it could be for, if for anything specific. Does it serve a specific purpose?

Thanks!
-Julio

With us humans propensity to carry around superflous junk in their cars....you can fill it with all sorts of things ;o)
I find it very convenient to place my garage door opener ;o)
and my multi story parking ticket.
Spare set of sunnies goes up in the pocket in front of the sunroof.
Car phone goes in the armrest along with a couple of pens and note pad.
LED torch and camera are in the glove compartment....and that is about all I carry in my car ;o]

Spare change, is my guess. Easy (almost) to get the coins in there, but hell to get them out!

Tried putting my phone in there, however when I throttle the car, the phone comes flying out. Now I am with OldMike, change goes in, hard to get it back out.

That is a piggy bank for repairs. You place large bills in there each time you start the car, and eventually you remove the tray when it fills up - hopefully just in time for the latest thing that broke.

I discovered that along the top of the glove compartment there is a special hidden 'rack' specifically for storing a notepad and pen. Its hard to see from a sitting position.

The Jaguar name for it is Driver's Oddment Box (see item 10):

When I checked, my dealer doesn't have a "driver's oddment" in stock.

"oddment" - is that even a word ?
odds & sods, bits-n-pieces, doings yes, but "oddments"...?

I seem to read somewhere these compartments refered to as coin something-or-other. I keep a clean rag in mine for the windscreen condensation.

I hear "bits & bobs" a lot in England... but never oddments.

I put my wallet in that storage space. The sunglasses go in the sunglasses compartment on the ceiling.

I've always found it interesting that some people take their wallets out when they get in a car. Why is this done?

our jeans/pants pockets can be too tie for the fat wallet, I do put my wallet out in the door storage sometime but most likely I will forget to pick it up while getting off from the car

as an XJR owner, I can recommend it as a great spot for spare change, but only inside of a plastic bag, otherwise you have a lap full of change each time you have a lead foot
