Default Question: WHich cam/valve covers for my X308? P/N?

I feel it's about time to swap the cam/valve covers.
I am having problems finding the correct part numbers
My model: Xj8 / X308 / 1999 / Sovereign / 3,2L
Does it make any difference in these regards, that I have 3.2L and not 4.0L?
I came across some P/N on the net - but I am not confident that those are the right ones...
I am looking for the left and the right one...

I question why you'd want to swap your cam covers...unless they are damaged in some form? Other than that a new set of gaskets and seals (you'd need these anyways), about 2-3 hrs of your time. Make a bucket of suds using dish soap and scrub away with the wife's dish scrub brush...umm, errr, I mean a scrub brush you always use. That'll save you minimum around $250-300 US dollars for a pair (plus shipping, another $50 or so and waiting), plus you'd probably have to clean them anyway before installing. If you want new, the 4.0L here in the US are running aroun $480 ea. and they say not in stock. So in any case your not ahead in the deal, just out the extra expense.

Now if you have scratches and such for the reason for replacement, again do the clean up and either find a paint shop to match the color and respray or someone to duplicate the color in a rattle can for DYI. Maybe you'll find one off the shelf? I'm fairly certain any would be cheaper than buying another set that may be the same condition you already have.

From everything I found per engine, they are the same except for stroke as per this site... https://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?t=1468798 ...the only thing I'd be concerned for would be with or w/o VVT. I do not know if that makes a difference for the design, so another reason to stick with what you've got.

I cannot do a proper search here in the US because we don't have any 3.2 's and any part # comes up for a 4.0L. On the one item I did find for a 3.2 (of course it was eBay), a set of trim covers for the motor, it does say 4.0/AB 3.2 by the part # in pics, none of the 4.0L cam covers had clear enough pics. Hope this helps, just gotta do a bit of elbow grease to bring'em back would be my suggestion.

Hi Highhorse,
I certainly have a reason for wanting new cam covers - the reason is "26 year old plastic, used in a hot environment, where it should never have been installed to start with" - I wrote this post a while ago:

https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/x...covers-266148/

Well, my fix still works, but as it is already though to get new cam covers now, it will be impossible in the future, hence I'd like to buy them now. Also, I have an OBDII code, which tells me an O2 sensor is buggered, which is not possible, as it is new, and I think one explanation could be that I may have an air leakage in the covers.

So if I would know my P/Ns for sure (X308, V8, 3.2L, 1998 or 1999), I could try to source them....

3.2 Lit. engines did not have VVT (but verify that this is the case on your engine, just to make sure), so the cam covers you need should be either the first or the second pair shown on the diagram depending on your VIN. However, according to SNG Barratt website, both have been superseded by AJ81466 and AJ81467.

On the other hand, SNG Barratt show that cam covers C2A1513 and C2A1515 are for X308 without VVT.

Ok, well that does determine your course of action. Here is a site with one part # and cost in US $... https://www.jaguarparts.com/oem-part...-cover-c2a1516 ...this should be a list off US eBay, it's a compilation of valve cover parts, scroll down for the covers... https://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_fro...cover&_sacat=0
(3) eBay price comparison, one has a part # in the title, same as the one above...used one... https://www.ebay.com/itm/20474084537...fc224d939ac319
...used one... https://www.ebay.com/itm/15512350814...Bk9SR8To8vD6Yw
...new one... https://www.ebay.com/itm/16639123231...ampid%3APL_CLK

Damn, it's like pulling teeth to find anyone who sells Jag parts in NSW. Any dealer in the US has a parts dept with a parts request sheet, but I'll be damned I don't see one in any Jag dealer there. Each one I went to was a cookie cutter web site of the other. No wonder you posted here.

This was the best Aussie one that came up using my US server... http://jagworks.com.au/ ...they have an eBay page, but it's pretty pathetic. But it does say to call them and they'll try to find it for you.
I can highly suggest checking recycle yards in England as well. Plenty to be had there and with plenty of parts available and they should have 3.2's. Got my rear sun screens (it wasn't a US option) and power folding mirrors from there. I'd check the ENG eBay as well.

**Can always count on MS to put in a good post....

Thanks, M.: of course, the Barratt Catalogue! I plain forgot that one...And yes: I do not have VVT (I know that, as I swapped the timing chain already). I also come to the conclusion now:
LHS cam cover for 3.2L (and probably also 4.0L) without VVT: C2A1513
RHS cam cover for 3.2L (and probably also 4.0L) without VVT: C2A1515

And thanks Highhorse. Yes, I know that it is hard to get Jag parts in NSW. I am not looking for Used parts, especially not with the cam covers - who says that what they sell is better than what I have?
I buy my parts in GB, US and China,
I already found an acceptable source for the LHS, but finding the RHS is a lot tougher. Actually, the price at Barratt is not too bad. But I wonder - and I have just sent an email to Barratt to ask - if they ship to Australia at all...
