Default Quick tensioners question

Excuse my ignorance,..... how many secondary tensioners I need to order, and how many bolts? Also,....where to get them for less?

No issues with my 98 VDP, but I want to do this ASAP, and change the valve gaskets at the same time (or can the old ones be reused?). No leaks, no rattle, no issues.

Thanks

you will need two. YOu can order them on ebay and make sure they are the metal ones and they will come with 2 new bolts you cannot reuse the old ones. Also replace the gaskets and all the spark plug seals as as set. you may as well do it since you're doing the tensioners.

Thanks. I'm planning the zip-tie method, anything I should watch for? Another thing that bothers me,...I don't know if my Cat has the old tensioners or not (just bought it couple of weeks ago with 80K on the clock), but to check, I have to pull the covers, and if I need them, I need to place the order (car will be down until the parts arive, which could be a week or more).
I read somewhere that the tensioners are the same as in Lincoln (?), so I'm thinking a local auto parts store (instead of Ebay), which usually has them the same day, if the order is placed before 10AM.

Just to add to what coastal said, the old bolts will not work with the new tensioners. The length is different and the old ones will bottom out before they get tight. I agree about the gaskets and plugs, and don't forget, this is not your father's Oldsmobile, the valve/cam covers are not made of cast iron !

Another option would be to pick up the FelPro gasket set, remove the covers to inspect, replace the gaskets and put the covers back on. If you do need new tensioners you can reuse the new gaskets. You can save a lot of money buying the tensioners online, either from ebay or sunroadfordparts.com

+1 on the online ford parts, that is the tensioners (and bolts) I used on my VDP.

A 1998 is an AJ26, I'm fairly certain the felpro gasket set won't fit. The AJ27 (1999->), you can use the Felpro set that fits the 3.9L Ford of the same vintage.

Thank you Guys!

So what gasket set will fit AJ26, and where to get it?

Went to sunroadfordparts.com, but I have no idea which model/year I'm looking for?

These are the Ford part numbers you should order:

-Ford PN 2W9Z6K254BA Right Secondary metal bodied Tensioner (1 required)

-Ford PN 2W9Z6K254CA Left Secondary metal bodied Tensioner (1 required)

-Ford PN W500301S300 Bolt (4 required)

You will need to get the valve cover gaskets and spark plug seals from a Jaguar dealer for your model.

RIght and left cover gaskets (respectively):
W0133-1623209
W0133-1623245

the spark plug gaskets (need 4 sets of 2) I got at Amazon, though there are lots of other places to get them.

While you are waiting for the parts to arrive do some heavy reading on this forum on how to change out the tensioners. For our X308's the issue comes up about 1 out of every 9 posts. Lots of great write-ups and helpful tricks. Don't remove the oil dipstick tube from the engine

I know a place locally in OC that will sell them to you for under $80 each (secondaries). The bolts are available at the dealer for not much $

Where exactly are you?

BMA in Glendale has excellent prices I have found and very quick on special orders.

Good luck

Eric
