So the Vanden Plas badge fell off the metal tray of my XJ8 where the trunk key is inserted. I found a replacement on eBay but it came with a full new metal tray attached. Two questions:
- Would you take the VP badge off the new tray and fix it into the old tray currently attached to my car, or take off the old one from the car and fix the entire new tray/badge on where it was?
- What adhesive would you use?
Thx!

I'd like to think that the badge is very firmly attached to the new tray, which means, if you try to remove it from there it could break. Maybe, without doing any damage, try to confirm with a little screwdriver or cutter-knife (do not cut yourself), if it sits really firm. It should sit firm, but some may be loose - after all: this is the root-cause of your problem in the first place...
That confirmed, I'd remove the old frame - carefully with a cutter knife - with the same caveat as above. It is attached with some kind of double sided sticky tape. After removal of the fame remove the remnants of that sticky take with e.g. wax & grease remover or isopropanol alcohol or even paint thinner. Then use high quality (3M-like) double-sided sticky tape to attach the new frame and badge. If you do not have that: It's cheaply available on the usual online-platforms. I did remove mine before repainting the complete boot-lid (trunk-lid).
I had the same issue. Remove the rear badge with some string / floss and plastic pry tools. Slowly move around it while pull it off.
once it’s clean I used some alcohol and a plastic pry tool to remove the residual adhesive. Once the surface is as clean as you can get it attach the new one.

You might also use the key to guide the replacement badge into place for the final 'push' onto whatever adhesive used so the keyhole is in alignment.
I favor 3M VHB double sided adhesive tape.
It is useful in situations like this.
I don’t get to answer many queries on this site but I have some experience in this field. Use fishing line and heat from a hair dryer to remove the old badge. Start on a corner and use the fishing line to saw thoroughly the adhesive holding it attached. Once removed spray the remains residue with WD40 and let that set for a few minutes then wipe off. This method won’t scratch your paint finish. A razor knife can be dangerous to you and the paint/finish. Once removed then use two sided tape or glue to reattach the new emblem using the key to align the key opening.
