Default Rear lights - what's going on?!

Hi again

Getting to grips with the many 'quirks' of my xj sovereign...!

When I put the side lights on, the rear main lights come on as well - or is this the brake light? Because when I press the brake this bulb just gets brighter and that's all. Is this right?!

Also - when the lights are off and I brake, the bulb defect light comes on. When the lights are on, the bulb defect light is on constantly unless I press the brake, at which point it goes off!

What's going on?!

Many thanks

Gavin

Start by checking all bulbs for the tail light assy on each side for burned or broken filaments.

You need to look at a wiring diagram to get the color codes for the different bulbs.

Check the wiring in the trunk for shorts and broken wires.

From the behavior of the lamp check indicators, I might guess you have a taillamp ground problem. But, as Mike suggested, you should check all of the lamps for bad filaments, and make sure the correct bulbs are installed.
You did not mention the history...

Check to see if either the right or left tail light stays on all the time.
If this is the case then you might have to replace or repair the SLCM (Security Lock and Control Module), see post# 1 in the following thread:

You refer to it as a "Sovereign"- what year is your car?

Look like it is 1995 XJ6 from his postings in the X300 section.
