Refinishing Milan wheels, special tools needed for disassembly?
Are there any special tools needed to split the Milan wheels? I have the special adapter for filling the tires, but I want to make sure there won't be any surprises for the vendor when they go to take the rims apart.
Thanks!
Thanks!
Snap On 3/8" Drive 8mm 12 Triple Square Socket Driver FTSM8C is what I used on my Montreals when I had them redone. The BBS valve core base has 1 or 2 o rings (from memory) that will likely need replaced.
Disassembling them was a major PIA. I needed to have the tires removed first, and then use a torch on the barrel to heat each bolt individually to remove it. I WOULD NOT hand these over to a refinisher unless you really know they're high end and willing to take the time to do it right. The bolts are NLA, so if you break one you're screwed. I don't even want to think about trying to find the valve "stem" ones. I said a prayer before removing each of those. By some miracle I got them all out.
After that you need to actually split them which for me was pretty difficult. Mine were really stuck together. A sledge and wooden block to the back of the faces finally drove them out. then you need to rip off the beauty rings. There is no way you're saving them, no chance. They're absurdly expensive and kind of dumb so I'm just going to have the lips polished and cleared over. I also opted to go with silver. Oyster is cool, but on my car silver would look better. Good luck.

The valves are being remanufactured - you can buy them here if anyone ever needs them.

A full set of Ti bolts are from here

18-19-20 trim rings were available the last time I checked, again from SB wheels (nothing to do with me btw).
One of the smaller Portasol torches directly on the bolt for a few seconds usually breaks the threadloc, tighten slightly to check then wind each out, scotchbrite pads to restore the heads. Good form to run a thread chaser down the holes on the barrel to clear any remaining threadloc and stop a damaged thread, especially on the valve.
