Already done the tensioners.

Someone else suggested it could be a stretched chain. That might be a possibility, since I noticed a significant difference between both secondary tensioners: the one on the left bank expanded almost to its max, while the right hand one was sort of hardly out. (There is a pin that stops the tensioner from expanding when you install them and you pull it out when ready).

Question is, can you replace the secondary chain without taking off the front cover? I could envision loosening both cam shafts and lift the intake one up, so I can slip the new chain on. Anybody tried that one yet?

I saw another mechanic in the jaguar shop split a new chain and install a link from a Mercedes oil pump chain to re-connect the chain without removing the VVT sprocket.

I would not try it, but the car started, ran and left the shop.

No idea if it lasted?????

They use those in industry -- thought I saw someone selling a kit to do the Jaguar secondary. In theory -- they should work ... there is no force working against the clip. Saves a lot of time and possible other damage ---

I have a very similar problem on my 2009 XF, the rattle is only on cold start ups for a few seconds then it goes away. I tried flushing the oil before an oil change but it did not fix the problem.

Marco, did you ever find the cause of your "cold start rattle"? My 1999 4.0L has the same issue. A cold start rattle for less than 5 seconds, then it goes away until the next cold start. Thank you, Warren C. Warburton

Jaguar issued a TSB several decades ago and the LATEST 'metal-body' chain tensioners supersede all others.

The metal body chain tensioners are light years ahead of the plastic.
